Trump's budget would steer $20M to Jack Nicklaus-backed hospital project

Source: Politico

The White House's proposed budget includes funding for a small children's health program sought by one of President Donald Trump's golfing buddies: Jack Nicklaus.

Under the administration's fiscal 2020 funding plan released Monday, HHS would steer $20 million toward a mobile children's hospital project at Miami's Nicklaus Children's Hospital, named for the legendary golfer.

Nicklaus had lobbied Trump on the golf course in Florida, and he met with HHS Secretary Alex Azar and then-OMB Director Mick Mulvaney in Washington, D.C., to request funds, say two individuals with knowledge. Trump personally directed HHS to earmark the funds to help Nicklaus develop mobile children's hospitals, one individual said.

While HHS has supported the use of mobile hospitals after disasters, like devastating hurricanes that have hit the Gulf Coast and the Caribbean, health officials haven't previously seen the need for specialized mobile hospitals for children.

1. The safety net for billionaires

will be much stronger. But then again, $20 million, why you can barely run a yacht on such a pittance.

6. Fine. Take it out of Trump's vacation money

Mobile pediatric hospitals sounds like a worthy thing...a lot more worthy than paying all that money to let Donald Trump waddle around a golf course on my dime.

8. Sorry I just don't see the big deal on this

Most things in the budget are from lobbying by people for the pet projects. Some of those pet projects can be a total waste of money or a way to line their pockets, other pet projects can actually be used purely for good purposes and then there is everything in between. Just because he's a Trump buddy doesn't automatically make him bad, it might make him guliable, it might make him an opportunist etc but from the brief description of the project it sounds like this might actually be for good. He could just as easily have been pushing the project with a democratic president if he felt it was worth it. Maybe he's doing it soley for vanity but if it does good then I don't care, let him have his vanity.

9. +1

Nicklaus and his wife founded the Nicklaus Children's Health Care Foundation in 2004, and it donated to what was then known as Miami Children's Health System over the years. It made a huge pledge in 2015, so the receiving foundation renamed itself to Nicklaus Children's Health System.

10. Yeah. Politics as usual. At least ...

At least it wasnít money for something crazy. Read one bill and youíll be bewildered at all the pork. But thatís why I used to hold my nose and vote for Dole in Kansas - he had clout, kept our bases open and sent back pork. 🤷🏻‍♀️
