WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson, long considered a top candidate to become the next secretary of defense, has decided to resign after about two years leading a service at the heart of Americaís campaigns in Syria and Afghanistan, a U.S. official told Reuters.

Wilson, who aims to return to academia, was not asked to leave by anyone in President Donald Trumpís administration and was not resigning under pressure, the official told Reuters.

She plans to step down on May 31, if the University of Texas Board of Regents approves her selection to be president of University of Texas at El Paso, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

3. If this is the Heather Wilson who once represented New Mexico

in Congress, she has some major baggage. No doubt this is one of the reasons she is stepping down before the bright light of discovery lands upon her (again), which it definitely would if she was being vetted to be the next secretary of defense.

During her last campaign for Congress in NM there was a major story about her private life that got quashed and would have done her in if given the light of day. But she lucked out because her opponent refused to "go there" and by virtue of being one of the hand-picked minions of the revered and adored Senator Dominici, (who had some major baggage of his own).

I'm just so sick of these entitled, elite, losers sliding by, while regular, i.e. 'normal' people pay and pay and pay. I'm probably overreacting because of the Manafort news.. but really, all this crap is so upsetting.

5. Getting out one step ahead of the scandal?

Oh, and just your daily reminder that we still don't have a defense secretary and a number of ambassadors because this administration is a nightmare of screechy incompetence
