Democratic National Committee rejects Fox News for debates, citing New Yorker article

Source: The Washington Post

By Paul Farhi March 6 at 1:05 PM

The Democratic National Committee has decided to exclude Fox News Channel from televising any of its candidate debates during the 2019-2020 cycle as a result of published revelations detailing the cable network’s close ties to the Trump administration.

In a statement Wednesday, DNC Chairman Tom Perez cited a story in the New Yorker magazine this week that detailed how Fox has promoted President Trump’s agenda. The article, entitled “The Making of the Fox News White House,” suggested that the news network had become a propaganda vehicle for Trump.

“I believe that a key pathway to victory is to continue to expand our electorate and reach all voters,” said Perez in his statement to The Washington Post. “That is why I have made it a priority to talk to a broad array of potential media partners, including Fox News. Recent reporting in the New Yorker on the inappropriate relationship between President Trump, his administration and Fox News has led me to conclude that the network is not in a position to host a fair and neutral debate for our candidates. Therefore, Fox News will not serve as a media partner for the 2020 Democratic primary debates.”

Winning the exclusive rights to televise the 12 candidate debates is considered a prestigious prize in the television business. The debates typically draw large audiences — the first Republican debate in August 2015 attracted a record 24 million viewers — and are a vehicle for promoting the networks’ news programs.

7. Politico - Bernie Sanders accepts Fox News debate invitation (2016)

Does this prevent individual candidates from accepting invitations from Fox News?

https://www.politico.com/blogs/on-media/2016/05/bernie-sanders-fox-news-democratic-debate-223337

Sen. Bernie Sanders has accepted a Fox News invitation for a Democratic debate in California, the Sanders campaign announced on Wednesday.

“Both campaigns have been invited by Fox News to a debate. We have told the network that we would accept the invitation with the understanding that we can reach mutual agreement on the debate moderators, the format and other details,” Jeff Weaver, Sanders’ campaign manager said in a statement.

Fox News has expressed interest in holding a Democratic debate for months and has been publicly lobbying the Democratic National Committee. In March, both Sanders and Hillary Clinton participated in back-to-back town halls with Fox host Bret Baier. On Tuesday, Fox News sent a formal letter to both campaigns inviting them to a debate, the Washington Post reported. The letters and the Sanders campaign's statements didn't specify a time or place, though Fox News said the debate would be moderated by anchors Baier, Megyn Kelly and Chris Wallace, who have been roundly praised for their handling of three Republican debates.

“Fox News has suggested several debate venues in California to the Democratic National Committee and both candidates. We are also offering a variety of dates, being careful to exclude Friday and Saturday nights, per the agreement between the DNC and candidates. Fox will release further debate details as appropriate, given that only one of the two candidates has accepted our debate invitation so far," Bill Sammon, VP and Washington Managing Editor said in a statement.

9. I don't know. I wonder if he accepted before or after DNC turned down the invite

or if it's because Bernie is not actually a Democrat.

10. Be Careful

I got a warning at Daily Kos for pointing out that Bernie is not a member of the Democratic Party. However the article is dated 2016.

35. Sanders will be Democrat for life, campaign says (2016)

Bernie was a Democrat for life before, too. How can Tom Perez keep candidates from accepting Fox News debate invitations?

34. It is relevant in that the DNC can't keep candidates...

...from accepting invitations to a Fox News debate the way Bernie did. He did it before and what is to keep a candidate from doing it again and attacking the DNC, not Fox, as being corrupt and in the tank?

3. They don't want them.

They pulled out in 1988 because the demands of the campaigns got too ridiculous. Now, they mostly stick to state and local races.

4. What's really important is who moderates

I don't trust any network hack, talent or production staff -- they all have rating agendas. We consistently get the same glossed-over bullshit.

A good decision I think, you don't want to boost their audience with a "real" debate, and the hard core MAGA folks aren't likely to be reached with a sane discussion...
