Kashmir escalation: Pakistan 'shoots down two Indian jets'

Source: bbc

Pakistan says it has shot down two Indian Air Force jets in a major escalation of the Kashmir conflict. An army spokesman said one of the planes had fallen inside Pakistan and a pilot had been arrested. There is no confirmation from India which claimed to have shot down a Pakistani aircraft.

Pakistan earlier said it had hit Indian targets, a day after India struck militants in Pakistan. The raids follow a militant attack in Kashmir which killed 40 Indian troops. Also on Wednesday, Pakistan's foreign ministry said Pakistani jets had launched air strikes across the Line of Control (LoC) dividing Pakistani- and Indian-controlled Kashmir.

Pakistan said it had "taken strikes at [a] non-military target, avoiding human loss and collateral damage".

Indian authorities said the Pakistani jets had been pushed back.

or attack a completely unrelated country. Dude might even go to war with the state of Indiana over this. Build the border wall around Indiana!

15. When you're in India, Google Maps shows all of Kashmir and the Karakoram as being in India

So, e.g. K2 is considered the highest point in India rather than Kangchenjunga.

When Radcliffe drew the line he left a bit of the Punjab in India for reasons nobody has understood then or since. That strip of valley made it possible to move Indian troops into Kashmir. Kashmir itself was basically entirely Muslim -- except for the Raja, Harry Singh, who was Hindu despite his name, who got to decide which country his would belong to (Radcliffe may in fact have left that bit of Indian Punjab to make Singh's choice realistic). Unfortunately Singh tried to play India and Pakistan off of each other to gain independence, and failed miserably. (Also I'd imagine you know most of this; this is for the lurkers.)

While the luxury textile economy is no doubt desirable on its own, the real point of the fight over Kashmir is whether or not India can block China's access to Pakistan.

Hi,
another war far far away from us should not worry our country, except that both sides have nuclear weapons & have rattled the saber before.

12. The Indian Mig-21's were supposed to have been phased out by 2017.

I'm surprised they're still being used as front-line fighters, unless India is just using them as bait to escalate the confrontation.

16. The silence from the State Dept

and the White House is telling. Hey rubes in the media look over here, nothing more important than a photo op with an enemy.

"War at the Top of the World", is a quick read on the politics of Kashmir and nuclear weapons proliferation. imo

issued a statement, had called the ministers of both nations and "urged" restraint.

Terrorist Kim gets a state visit and not a mention of State Dept. travel to meet with these leaders to broker a peace deal?

India, Pakistan claim to down each other's jets as Kashmir conflict heats up

James Mackenzie, Alasdair Pal
9 MIN READ

ISLAMABAD/NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India and Pakistan both said they shot down each other’s fighter jets on Wednesday, with Pakistan capturing an Indian pilot a day after Indian warplanes struck inside Pakistan for the first time since a 1971 war, prompting world powers to urge restraint.

Both countries have ordered air strikes over the last two days, the first time in history that two nuclear-armed powers have done so, while ground forces have exchanged fire in more than a dozen locations.

Tensions have been running high since a Feb. 14 suicide car bombing by Pakistan-based militants in Indian-controlled Kashmir killed at least 40 Indian paramilitary police, but the risk of conflict rose dramatically on Tuesday when India launched an air strike on what it said was a militant training base.

A senior Indian government source said that 300 militants were killed in Tuesday’s strike. Pakistan says no one was killed.

22. India says expects safe return of pilot held by Pakistan

Source: Reuters

WORLD NEWS FEBRUARY 27, 2019 / 9:00 AM / UPDATED 12 MINUTES AGO

India says expects safe return of pilot held by Pakistan

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India’s foreign ministry said on Wednesday it had told Pakistan’s acting high commissioner that New Delhi expects the immediate and safe return of a military pilot held by Pakistan.

India and Pakistan both said they shot down each other’s fighter jets on Wednesday, a day after Indian warplanes struck inside Pakistan for the first time since a 1971 war, prompting world powers to urge restraint.

India said it had lost one of its planes in combat with Pakistan over Kashmir and a pilot was missing. It summoned Pakistan’s acting envoy to serve a diplomatic demarche.

“It was made clear that Pakistan would be well advised to ensure that no harm comes to the Indian defense personnel in its custody. India also expects his immediate and safe return,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.

I went to CNN's site to check on it and they have it below a story about how Gerber has picked a new baby to represent the brand.
