Union reps: Statewide WV teacher, service personnel strike to begin Tuesday

by JoAnn Snoderly, Charles Young and John Mark Shaver STAFF WRITERS 1 hr ago CHARLESTON — Officials with teachers' and service personnel unions have called for a statewide strike starting Tuesday in response to the controversial education reform bill currently before the West Virginia Legislature. The strike was called following proposed amendments in the Senate to the House version of the bill that would increase the number of charter schools and reimplement a provision on education savings accounts that would allow 1,000 accounts for students with special needs. That ties the raise and the health care to school vouchers for private school and homeschoolers.

2. The folks at my church are readying to set up childcare.
We call it our pop-up day camp for elementary school kids. Breakfast and lunch, help with homework, storytime, arts and crafts, fun science experiments, lots of physical activity.
It's too late to set up for Tuesday, but we'll be ready on Wednesday, if the schools are still closed. |

If they have to close schools the teachers will get even more support. Parents can't take time off work to care for their kids and they may not be able to afford a babysitter. The school districts lose money for each day schools are closed too.

5. Our Jefferson County schools are closed.
We got a call last night about 7:30 pm.
Tomorrow looks as if it would have been a snow day anyway. After, ??? |
