Former Mass. Gov. William Weld to announce possible run for president

William Weld, the former Republican governor of Massachusetts who was the Libertarian Party's nominee for vice president in 2016, is mulling a run for president and could make an announcement about a possible presidential run as soon as Thursday.

Sources tell NewsCenter 5 he has taken a leave of absence from his law firm and it is unclear whether he is announcing the run or announcing the formation of an exploratory committee.

The news was first reported by WCVB's On The Record co-anchor Janet Wu, who has learned any possible run would be made as a Republican.

The news makes Weld the first who could create a primary challenge for President Donald Trump in 2020. Former Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake said Tuesday he wouldn't challenge President Trump in 2020, putting to rest months of speculation about what’s next for one of the GOP party's most prominent Trump critics.

5. William Weld has a checkered political/affiliation past, to say the least:

He was originally a republican and did fairly well in Massachusetts. Unbelievably, when he was republican governor, he resigned to devote all his time to lobby for the job of ambassador to Mexico, for which he was ultimately nominated by Bill Clinton (and blocked by Jesse Helms)

After that he moved to New York and tried for the republican nomination for governor, and failed.

His last attempt was as running mate of Gary Johnson in 2016 as a Libertarian.

He's become the Harold Stassen of the 21st Century.

6. After a review by forum hosts...locking.

The actual announcement of a run for the Presidency is LBN, not the possible run
