House Democrats have added more than $1 billion in border-related spending to a package of funding bills that would reopen most of the government, even as President Trump said he would have a major announcement on Saturday about the border and the shutdown stalemate, the New York Times reports.
Both sides actions were the first indications of possible movement over the shutdown after a week of inertia and harsh words between Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Mr. Trump.
The proposal to include more spending on border measures is scheduled for a vote next week
The plan reflects a shift in strategy by congressional Democrats, who have maintained that they would not give the president a counterproposal until he drops his insistence on a wall and signs legislation to reopen the government.

Demit
(11,238 posts)It's not as much making the first move, it's reframing the issue. Plus it steals his thunder from whatever the hell his announcement today is supposed to be.

(26,273 posts)the money for the wall he was demanding.
Demit
(11,238 posts)They haven't voted on the bill yet; it hasn't gone to the Senate yet; and the Senate is adjourned till the 29th anyway.
That's a lot of time for getting news coverage on what exactly it is the Dems are proposing. The news won't be able to "both-sides" the issue anymore. The onus will be on Trump to respond. The news will be focused on HOW he responds. If he rejects the Dems proposal & keeps insisting on a wall instead, with the shutdown dragging on he'll look more & more stupid and unreasonable to more & more people. The pressure is on him. I think this is a smart move.

(15,124 posts)I understand the "Don't give an inch!" attitude. But, this money is NOT for the wall and it demonstrates that Trump is lying when he say's we "want open borders" and "don't care about border security".
This will further erode Trump's approval rating.
There is every reason to trust Speaker Pelosi's judgment.

(16,402 posts)We'll have to wait to see what actually happens, but this offer also makes Dems look very reasonable and the GOP unreasonably intransigent if they don't budge - especially in light of the suffering this shutdown is causing for so many.

(7,522 posts)Sounds like the money is for "border security" specifically and not the wall.

(812 posts)Compassionate and caring people always have to cave in to heartless bastards when suffering starts. Republicans and Trump don't give a flying fuck about people living from paycheck to paycheck. They knew that if the squeeze was on, democrats would cave because they wouldn't be able to bear the suffering.

(6,930 posts)Offer up some more money ONLY for border security, the Gov MUST be opened first and let that asshat turn them down flat. Him and Turtle will still OWN the shutdown.

(1,279 posts)Also by him saying there will not be a vote on anything that Trump will refuse to sign, it shows that he is not following the Constitution. As leader of the Senate he works for Congress and the people, not Trump.

(7,522 posts)That's not supposed to happen because it's how checks and balances work. Mitch is in cahoots with 45 of course because he's lawful-evil and sides with whoever butters his butt. Can they have a hearing and make him answer questions about his flagrant rule abuse?
