Trump denies knowledge of Manafort's correspondence with Russian associate

Source: Politico

By MATTHEW CHOI 01/10/2019 11:17 AM EST

President Donald Trump on Thursday denied any knowledge of his former campaign chairman's sharing of polling data with a Moscow-linked associate, distancing himself from a possible tie to the Russian government during the 2016 presidential election.

Attorneys for former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort accidentally revealed in a court filing unsealed Tuesday that their client shared 2016 polling data and discussed a peace plan for Ukraine with Konstantin V. Kilimnik, a business associate of Manafort's with ties to the Russian government. The filing was in response to a charge by special counsel Robert Mueller's team that Manafort lied during Mueller's investigation into the 2016 election.

The correspondence with Kilimnik, which was unknown before the court filing was revealed Tuesday, could offer a path for Mueller to establish coordination between Russia and the Trump campaign to swing the election in the president's favor. Trump has denied there was collusion between his campaign and the Kremlin.

Several operatives with Russian ties have already been reported to have penetrated Trump's 2016 circle, including a meeting between members of Trump's team and a Russian lawyer promising Kremlin-sourced damaging information on Hillary Clinton. But the correspondence between Manafort and Kilimnik is seen by many as perhaps the closest suggestion to date of active coordination with Russia. Still, Mueller has yet to publicly establish that Trump himself had any knowledge of the correspondence or that he coordinated with Russian operatives.

2. Trump better hope that Mueller doesn't have any

intercepts of communication between Trump Tower and Alfa bank.

The Mercers need to go to jail over this also.

17. It's not their time yet. I think they will deal with the government portion of

helping the Russians first and then all the money bags that helped the Russians after we have the government dealt with. Just my thoughts.

10. No mention of Gates in that article but we do have this Trump quote from Feb. 2017.

"Now, Manafort has totally denied it. He denied it. Now people knew that he was a consultant over in
that part of the world for a while, but not for Russia. I think he represented Ukraine or people having
to do with Ukraine, or people that -- whoever. But people knew that. Everybody knew that."

******

The Ukrainian people that Manfort worked with were all known as pro Putin people.

15. Thanks! I found it.

Gates could be the one who knows if Trump knew and curious if the campaign's private polling firm involves the sleaze Brad Parscale?

"Both Mr. Manafort and Rick Gates, the deputy campaign manager, transferred the data to Mr. Kilimnik in the spring of 2016 as Mr. Trump clinched the Republican presidential nomination, according to a person knowledgeable about the situation. Most of the data was public, but some of it was developed by a private polling firm working for the campaign, according to the person.

Mr. Manafort asked Mr. Gates to tell Mr. Kilimnik to pass the data to two Ukrainian oligarchs, Serhiy Lyovochkin and Rinat Akhmetov, the person said. The oligarchs had financed Russian-aligned Ukrainian political parties that had hired Mr. Manafort as a political consultant.

A representative for Mr. Akhmetov said he did not request or receive any data from Mr. Kilimnik and has had no contact with either Mr. Kilimnik or Mr. Manafort since before the 2016 presidential campaign. Mr. Lyovochkin did not respond to a request for comment."

4. Of course. Anyhow, Manafort was just a volunteer who brought coffee and doughnuts

to a couple of meetings. Didn't know the guy.

16. When the denial (lie) is proven false, will that lie mean LEGAL trouble, or just public humiliation?

Yeah... I know... I realized the silliness of what I wrote after I added the question-mark. They have no pride, no decency and cannot be humiliated.

But, I still wonder... are these types of public and "official" declarations (when false) likely to land him in legal hot-water?
