Her journey as a refugee led her to Syria, Kuwait, Jordan and Russia. Now an El Cajon resident, she has worked as a scientist, realtor, poet, and humanitarian.

Nital Meshkoor settled in El Cajon in 1998 following her escape from the first Iraq war, a journey that cost her many years of hardship, but her actions in the community have set her apart as a human rights activist and role model for refugees to come.

Nital is an amazingly strong woman! Her story should be widely shared to help people understand the ordeal that refugees fleeing the Middle East go through.

There's a misperception that refugees are drains on our economy. This woman is the opposite - contributing so much of her efforts to help others while becoming a successful businesswoman in her own right despite overcoming tremendous adversity.

Full disclosure: Nital is a member of our nonprofit media outlet's board, where she assists us with outreach to the multicultural communities in our diverse region, but her story was too compelling not to share it with the world.

Some other refugees are far less fortunate, suffering rape, murder, robbery, even death by drowning, sharks, or at the hands of terrorists or bombings.
