Chinese leader calls for reunification and says independence would be a disaster
Taiwans unification with China is inevitable, President Xi Jinping said on Wednesday, warning against any efforts to promote the islands independence and saying Beijing would not renounce the option of using military force to bring it into the fold.
Speaking at Beijings Great Hall of the People on the 40th anniversary of a key Taiwan policy statement, Xi said reunification must come under a one-China principle that accepts Taiwan as part of China, anathema to supporters of Taiwan independence.
All people in Taiwan must clearly recognise that Taiwan independence would only bring profound disaster to Taiwan, Xi said.
We are willing to create broad space for peaceful reunification, but will leave no room for any form of separatist activities, he said.
We make no promise to renounce the use of force and reserve the option of taking all necessary means, he said, adding that the issue is Chinas internal affair and that it would permit no external interferenc

Hey Xi, how did that reunification thingy go with Hong Kong, you really are full of shit, in fact your fucking communist dictator, if you have looked lately, and better yet, you and your state of Communism, thinks that independent unions should be quashed right along with the Tibet's religion.
So the only thing I would worry about is your expansionist bull shit........... and hegemony................

(5,621 posts)They can invade and conquer the island in a long weekend, and it would take us several weeks to just get naval assets in place. The Taiwanese military can put up a fight, and perhaps kill some Chinese soldiers, but they can't contest the strategic certainty that China will win the engagement. By that time the shooting is already over, and they'll have an interim government in place swearing that everything is all hunky dory.
Hong Kong wasn't a nation state itself. It was a pseudo-independent colony of the UK, and the UK had a treaty obligation to turn the island over to China.

(12,618 posts)Taiwan has more than two million soldiers in reserve, well equipped with modern weapons, aircraft, missiles, ships, armor, and artillery. Taiwan has mandatory military service for all males, which means almost the entire population knows how to fight.
China, on the other hand, has significant shortages in attack helicopters, drones, and amphibious landing craft, which makes an amphibious landing very difficult to achieve.
In 10 or 15 years, China may be able to successfully invade Taiwan, but it would be an unbelievably, bloody, protracted campaign with no guarantee of success.

(2,314 posts)But that's about it. The chinese military lacks the capability to land any significant number of troops on Taiwan, let alone on a contested beachhead. China lacks force projection capabilities, their military is largely untested, and their military leadership, from the company level on up, is full of incompetent officers who earned their positions through nepotism and bribery/political means instead of merit.

Our economy wholly depends on China, all the smart this and smart that are made in China, they could shut it all down in a heartbeat and they would last a hell of a lot longer then us in a commerce war. Not taking their side, just pointing out the fact that decades of losing jobs to them, decades of them buying our debt, decades of their cheap imports have given them the upper hand.

Their economy would be ruined without us, but we can do without their crap for awhile till we find other suppliers to take their place.
