Cyberattack from outside the U.S. hits newspapers across the country, preventing distribution

Source: LA Times

A cyberattack that appears to have originated from outside the United States caused major printing and delivery disruptions at several newspapers across the country on Saturday including the Los Angeles Times, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

The attack led to distribution delays in the Saturday edition of The Times, the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Chicago Tribune, Baltimore Sun and several other major newspapers that operate on a shared production platform. It also stymied distribution of the West Coast editions of the Wall Street Journal and New York Times, which are all printed at the Los Angeles Times’ Olympic printing plant in downtown Los Angeles.

“We believe the intention of the attack was to disable infrastructure, more specifically servers, as opposed to looking to steal information,” said the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment publicly.

No other details about the origin of the attack were immediately available, including the motive. The source identified the attacker only as a “foreign entity.”

It's suspicious to me that this attack began around the same time of the nationwide 911 outage, and with a partial government shutdown in effect.

Coincidence?

Our 911 went down for 24 hours a few days ago. I wonder if this is connected?

2. Just conducting tests.......

Are they just testing their abilities on a small scale........???????????

My worry is the internet, and worse, the Electrical Grid across the country.

THAT would bring down the entire country and throw the U.S. into total anarchy.......Just what Putin and others would want...........

If they took down the ability to communicate, esp the U.S. Military, it would be total caos..........

10. Ive said that all along.

The State Dept was the first step. Tillersons far from innocent. Gut the fed govt of workers, cause chaos and confusion, then turn out the lights so the only "news' any backwoods ignorant gop gets is from their 'news' sources on AM radios hooked to car batteries....brrrr. Imagine that?
The power grid is for sure the big shazam. We're in a very precarious position.

24. yep, that's what they are doing, whats not being reported on is the scary stuff

like attempts on power grids, power plants, gas distribution centers, ect… They could, for instance, cause a turbine to run out of control burning itself out and the specialty turbines could take months to replace. its a target rich environment and with tRumpsters in charge, its not a question of if, but when it will happen.

3. Wait until they hit our electrical grid and water sources.

I know I sound paranoid, but I think this has been in the works for a long time. Getting 45 into office was just the icing on the cake.

6. There was not a nationwide 911 outage,

but there was a nationwide problem with Centurylink--who assists with data transfer for Verizon--that affected 911 communications in some places.

9. That is true.

I don't mean to minimize it, as I was directly affected by it via internet and phone. Most of the 911 problems were in the West, but the repercussions of the problem were nationwide.

Called the paper delivery guy and he said it was some kind of problem with the distribution.

20. . . .

The problem caused widespread issues for Sun-Sentinel readers in South Florida, one of Tribune Publishing’s major markets. The paper told readers that it had been “crippled this weekend by a computer virus that shut down production and hampered phone lines,” according to a story on its website.

The problem caused widespread confusion, the paper noted, because subscribers who called the newspaper’s offices on Saturday morning were “told, incorrectly, that the numbers were not in service.”

Perpetual line crossers, but, that was a bridge too far. BULLSHIT.
Meanwhile let D's devour each other by accusing each other(?) and the electorate in general, of not voting for HRC. She won, and she won by margins MUCH bigger than we already know. The electoral college is rotten bc people will take bribes. And theyll take bribes now bc the country is falling apart when it comes to middle class jobs or any jobs w union fought for benefits circa the 70s and 80s.

21. A wise person once said:

That there is no such thing as coincidences.

Could be unrelated, yes, but given what we already know about the state of Soviet art in penetration of US infrastructure, it could just as easily be a dry run, testing ability, even flaunting the ability for purpose of psychological warfare.

They succeed in another way when we succumb to paranoia and see every system glitch as an external attack, which is exactly what this is, so..

Hopefully somebody, preferably outside the federal government, is working on spotting evidence of coordination.

29. Ted Koppel's book, "Lights Out" covers this nightmare

in detail and is a frightening read. All about cyber attacks on our electrical grid, infrastructure, internet, etc. and how woefully ill-prepared and outdated we are. And Putin is just the one to do it too.
