President Obama: The U.S. is stronger, 11 years after 9/11

Source: USA Today

President Obama devoted his Saturday radio address to the next week's anniversary of 9/11, saying the nation is stronger 11 years later.

"Instead of changing who we are, the attacks have brought out the best in the American people," Obama said.

Since that day, the president said, the U.S. has taken the fight back to al Qaeda, the group that planned the attacks in New York and Washington. Last year, U.S. special forces killed its leader, Osama bin Laden.

The 9/11 anniversary -- on Tuesday -- is also a time to remember the more than 3,000 people who lost their lives in those first hours, and the thousands of soldiers who have sacrificed their lives in the years since, the president said.

WEEKLY ADDRESS: Coming Together to Remember September 11th

In this week’s address, President Obama marked the eleventh anniversary of the September 11th attacks by remembering the innocent lives lost, and honoring the first responders and men and women in uniform who have served and sacrificed to keep our country safe. In the difficult years following the attacks, the United States has come back stronger as a nation, decimated the leadership of al-Qaeda, ensured that Osama bin Laden will never attack America again, and strengthened our alliances across the world. Looking forward, we will continue to demonstrate that the legacy of 9/11 is that no adversary or act of terrorism can change who we are as Americans, and that we will always come together to preserve and protect the country we love.

It would be a good time to think about all the deaths that have happened since that day too. It isn't just our troops who have died in those wars. We'll never know how many civilians we've killed with Bush's Shock and Awe carpet bombing of Baghdad because his administration chose not to count the dead and not to allow our press to go unless they were "imbedded" and watched closely by the military. About the ease with which Bush took us to war instead of going after the criminals and about how he and others have used the victims of the World Trade Center for political and personal gain.

I think about those things all the time. Osama Bin Laden killed thousands upon thousands of people in terrorist attacks long before he attacked us on that day. We never talk about that. Al Qaeda attacked our Embassies as well as those of other countries and our military. Clinton tried to ago after him but failed and he was ridiculed by the Republicans who accused him of "Wagging The Dog" to get attention off of him and Lewinsky. When Bush took office he was warned specifically that our worst enemy was Bin Laden and Al Qaeda and he shrugged his shoulders indifferently. Condi Rice ignored it with a sneer and Cheney, well he Cheneyed it and shot it in the face too for good measure.

9/11 coming up should be a day we, as a country think about and do something about our own war criminals and what they did after the attack, if not before and after. Lying us into the wars so the few at the top could profit obscenely from them is traitorous. Halliburton and Blackwater have grown wealthy beyond measure, and both have hurt this country in the eyes of the world. The US has cities like New York City which are veritable police states now. Practically every march for peace or anything else across the country brings out the riot goons and the tanks and tear gas and inevitably unarmed and peaceful demonstrators get hurt.

This country can be so narcissistic and that's really a sad thing to see. The Bush administration legitimized the dark side of this country when they embraced torture and greed and profit and war above any other method of dealing with the crime of 9/11. They used their stupid color codes to terrorize us with the mere announcement of what code we were to live under at their whim, which was always for political gain. There is so much to be uncomfortable about as a country, as American citizens in what has happened to this country since 9/11, up to and including the use of Drones by this administration. If we look at ourselves in a mirror, will what we see be worth breaking all the laws? Will it be OK to let American war criminals get off virtually free to enjoy their ill gotten wealth?
