NC Gov. Roy Cooper vetoes voter ID bill

Source: Raleigh News Observer

RALEIGH -- Gov. Roy Cooper vetoed a bill that would require voters show a form of photo identification before voting in person, calling it “a solution in search of a problem.”

The bill passed this month largely along party lines. A handful of Democrats voted for it, and the bill passed with veto-proof margins in both the state House and Senate.

Dallas Woodhouse, NC Republican Party executive director, posted a statement on Twitter from Chairman Robin Hayes. “The people voted to put Photo Voter ID in the State Constitution,” the statement said. “Cooper’s actions ignore the will and the vote of the people. Thankfully we will right this wrong.”

Voter ID has been a years-long goal for Republicans. A 2013 law that included a photo ID requirement to vote was overturned by federal courts in 2016. The GOP moved to add photo ID to the state constitution this year, and the amendment passed with 55 percent of the vote.

1. It pays to have a Democratic Governor that can veto this stuff, but it looks like veto-proof?

Dems voted for this mess?

4. That way he can say he never supported the bill when it comes up next election.

After the fiasco with the Repugs voting illegally in NC, we can hope this might sway some voters to the good side.

7. Veto proof just means there are enough members of the Legislature

who support the law that they can override a veto with a large enough majority. He still has the power to veto, it just may be overruled.

3. A handful of Democrats voted for it

well, Democrats only by name. When we can weed our party of pretend Dems we will be unstoppable.

5. More examples of GOP control in a state that is almost democratic proof

We dems have sat on our asses so much to allow the GOP to completely do whatever they want in many states. This is even more disappointing.
