Trump to roll back carbon rule on new coal plants

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Trump administration is expected on Thursday to roll back an Obama-era rule requiring new coal plants to slash carbon emissions, a move that could crack open the door in coming years for new plants fired by the fossil fuel.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will make an “energy policy announcement” at 1:30 p.m. EST (1830 GMT) on Thursday. Andrew Wheeler, EPA’s acting administrator, will speak alongside Harry Alford, president of the National Black Chamber of Commerce, a long-time opponent of former President Barack Obama’s limits on carbon emissions.

The EPA is expected to propose allowing new coal plants to emit up to 1,900 pounds (862 kg) of carbon dioxide per megawatt-hour of electricity, according to a New York Times report citing unnamed sources.

The Trump proposal, which is sure to be challenged by lawsuits from environmental groups, would replace an Obama-era standard allowing only 1,400 pounds of carbon per megawatt-hour.

3. But will industry do it?

Natural gas is far cheaper and cleaner. The price doesn't fluctuate as widely as coal and it puts less wear and tear on the facility as burning natural gas doesn't generate large amounts of sulfoxide compounds that become acidic when interacting with water in the air.

Wind and solar are now to the point where they are as cheap or cheaper than coal. Plus consumers in most of the country want cleaner energy. I know that if a new coal plant was proposed where I live, it would have difficulty getting past the various boards and approval that power companies need for that kind of infrastructure change.

This seems like a way for Trump to show his donors from coal that he hears them... unfortunately for him, electricity providers just don't want the coal.

5. No one is building new coal plants

Because they cost 4-8 times the cost of combined cycle gas plants or wind farms. This is only a ploy to his dim witted base. Peak coal ended around WW I and the last really big coal plants were built in the 1970s; those plants are rapidly approaching the end of their useful life cycle. He’s trying to resuscitate a three week old corpse

6. It's Trump's Potemkin Village!

No way new plants will be built...but watch him claim that he's been told 6-12 will be built in 2019 and initial construction and many jobs will start in January!

Yah.......sure!

7. I encourage Trump supporters to invest in coal companies

They should put all their retirement funds into being early investors in the coal industry, which is about to explode. Trump's going to open so many new coal mines and plants and create so many good jobs. Trump supporters will be laughing all the way to the bank.

9. Trump Mutual Fund

Great idea! He can pick all the stocks and mooch off his gullible supporters (and if he’s smart take the funds and short all of his purchases). If he’s really a good businessman he’d have a no sue clause written into the purchase.
