LAREDO, Texas (AP) — A U.S. Border Patrol agent who confessed to shooting four women in the head and leaving their bodies on rural Texas roadsides has been indicted on a capital murder charge, a prosecutor said Wednesday.

A grand jury decided to upgrade the charge against Juan David Ortiz , Webb County District Attorney Isidro Alaniz said at a news conference. Alaniz said prosecutors will seek the death penalty.

Ortiz, 35, was initially charged with four counts of murder, as well as aggravated assault and unlawful restraint. He has been held in Webb County jail on a $2.5 million bond since his Sept. 15 arrest in the border town of Laredo.

The Border Patrol intel supervisor and Navy veteran seemed to be living a typical suburban life with his wife and two children when the killings occurred. After the first slaying, he continued going to work as usual. He was eventually arrested after he pulled a gun on a woman who was able to escape and asked a state trooper for help.

1. I have a real problem hearing the border patrol referred to as "heroes", etc.

I have a great deal of respect for police..local and even state most of the time. They are on “the front line”, dealing with every sort of civilian, from respectful and upstanding to difficult and threatening. I respect MOST of the men and women in the military and veterans. But the US Border Patrol are a different civil servant altogether in my book.

Many are noble and honorable, and many are abusive and corrupt. I have had numerous experiences on the Canadian and Mexican border, and I am always relieved when I have gotten past them, and thankful when I haven’t had a negative experience. In my experience, too many are rude and abusive with their authority. I could share several stories that you probably would never believe. They need to be monitored and the bad apples weeded out. There are too many bad apples, in my opinion.

3. Story time!

When my wife and I were first married, I flew up to Canada to visit for the holidays, since my immigration hadn't gone through yet. I expected Canada Border Services Agency to side-eye me, since I figured they'd think I was planning to stay. Nope! I told them why I was entering the country, and the lady who was talking to me welcomed me to Canada, stamped my passport, and said she hoped I enjoyed the snow, as I was living in Arizona.

Compare and contrast with my experience with CBP while leaving Toronto. The guy asked what I'd been doing in Canada for a month, and I told him I'd spent the holidays with my wife and her family. Then he says, "Wait, so you live in Arizona and she lives in Ontario?" I confirmed that, and he says, "What kind of marriage is that?" I was utterly floored by his rude behavior.

Just about every Canadian I've spoken to on this topic has said they absolutely hate dealing with CBP, since they're almost universally rude assholes. Isn't it nice knowing that they're such fantastic ambassadors for our country?

5. Thanks for the story.

My wife is from Mexico. She is naturalized US citizen now, but we had some encounters you wouldn't believe. To be brief, one of the worst was when the US border patrol MADE ME stay in the car for 2 hrs while they interrogated my wife inside. Then the pompous SOB came out and interrogated me to see if our stories "matched". I was so flaming pissed, but what can you do!

The things they asked my wife, and the comments the bitches were saying between themselves about me and our marriage was enough to make me want to go inside and take them apart. They just assumed my wife didn't understand the English they were talking among themselves with. Deplorable SOB's.

I've had numerous other occasions as well, but that was the highlight to my experience with them.

2. I wonder if there would be charges if his name was John David Olson?
