New satellite images reveal activity at unidentified North Korean missile base

Washington (CNN) - New satellite images obtained exclusively by CNN reveal North Korea has significantly expanded a key long-range missile base located in the mountainous interior of the country, offering yet another reminder that diplomatic talks with the US have done little to prevent Kim Jong Un from pursuing his promise to mass produce and deploy the existing types of nuclear warheads in his arsenal.

The satellite imagery offers evidence that the Yeongjeo-dong missile base and a nearby, previously unreported site remain active and have been continuously upgraded, underscoring the reality of just how far apart Washington and Pyongyang are on the issue of denuclearization despite five months of sporadic talks.

While the base at Yeongjeo-dong has long been known to US intelligence agencies and analysts, researchers at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey told CNN that the images reveal construction on a new facility just seven miles away from the older site that had not been previously publicly identified.

'The base remains active'

"Satellite images show that the base remains active. Moreover, in the past year North Korea has significantly expanded a nearby facility that appears to be another missile base," the report states, noting that it is unclear whether the two bases are separate, or whether one is subordinate to other.

7. CNN: Bernie Sanders: Trump on right track with North Korea

This can't be. Hasn't North Korea been one of the areas that Bernie Sanders has been supportive of Trump? First, in 2017, when he praised Trump's plan to just lean on China to control North Korea, then just a few months ago when Trump agreed to a face to face meeting with no actual plan or agreement on the table.

(CNN)Sen. Bernie Sanders and President Donald Trump don't agree on much, but the Vermont independent says that if the President is genuinely coaxing China to help moderate North Korea, he is "doing the right thing."

"North Korea is a real danger to this world, and we have got to do everything we can to ... prevent a nuclear war and to get them to stop their nuclear program," said Sanders, speaking with CNN's Chris Cuomo on "New Day."

"China has got to apply the screws and tell North Korea that if their economy is going to survive, they cannot continue expanding their nuclear arms program and their missile program," he added.

"China is, in fact, the key," Sanders continued. "People have been working on China for years. If Trump is doing that, he's doing the right thing."

Bernie Sanders: Trump-Kim summit a 'positive step'

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Tuesday expressed cautious optimism about President Trump's historic meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

"While very light on substance, the meeting between President Trump and Kim Jong Un in Singapore represents a positive step in de-escalating tensions between our countries, addressing the threat of North Korea’s nuclear weapons, and moving toward a more peaceful future," Sanders said in a statement.

"Congress has an important role to play in making sure this is a meaningful and serious process and not just a series of photo ops," he added.
