Greek police protesting against austerity cuts blocked the entrance to the riot police headquarters on Thursday, preventing buses carrying riot police from leaving for the site of major demonstrations this weekend.
Scuffles broke out as riot police tried to clear the entrance of several dozen police union members - many in uniform - chanting anti-austerity slogans and holding banners.
"They would not let riot police buses depart for Thessaloniki," a police official said, referring to the northern city hosting a weekend trade fair where anti-austerity demonstrations are planned.
Some riot police appeared reluctant to tackle uniformed officers. "They make us fight against our own brothers," said one riot policeman who declined to be named.

(12,977 posts)So what's going on here? Are the neo-Nazi's running anti-austerity protests? Are the cops waking up to which side they're really on? Or are the police internally divided and is civil war about to break out?
This is all far too confusing.

(27,137 posts)...I think the Dawnies, (?) Dawnites (?) -- whatever -- I think they just took advantage of people's frustration with the existing parties, as well as it gave people a way to focus their angst against foreign workers (The Other) whom before they lost their own jobs no one really cared that much about.

(9,137 posts)are said to have voted Golden Dawn. And there is plain evidence of some police forces participating in neonazi actions against immigrants. But even though police wears uniform that does not mean they are uniform; there are also geographical political divides in Greece, and riot cops and ordinary beat cops are also not the same.
As for possibility of civil war, dunno but doubt that is what Greek people want, they had civil war about 60 years ago and junta about 40 years ago. But in case, Greek army is draft, not professional mercenary army.

(3,576 posts)Deficits don't matter at all, it's people getting jobs that is the important thing. The Republicans that want "austerity" for the USA are going to put this country into an even greater depression than the one in 1930. Iceland would be the best example to follow.

(27,137 posts)...is a central part of the ''softening-up'' (population weakening) process. It likewise very often results in negative reactions from the populace, which then gives TPTB ''justification in the use of force to restore order.'' The old-fashioned schema of the subjugation and control of the masses (and variations on this theme) is really all they know how to do.
