White House weighs booting Erdogan foe from U.S. to appease Turkey

Source: NBC

The White House is looking for ways to remove an enemy of Turkish President Recep Erdogan from the U.S. in order to placate Turkey over the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, according to two senior U.S. officials and two other people briefed on the requests.

Trump administration officials last month asked federal law enforcement agencies to examine legal ways of removing exiled Turkish cleric Fethullah Gulen in an attempt to persuade Erdogan to ease pressure on the Saudi government, the four sources said.

The effort includes directives to the Justice Department and FBI that officials reopen Turkey's case for his extradition, as well as a request to the Homeland Security Department for information about his legal status, the four people said.

They said the White House specifically wanted details about Gulen's residency status in the U.S. Gulen has a Green Card, according to two people familiar with the matter. He has been living in Pennsylvania since the late 1990s.

Career officials at the agencies pushed back on the White House requests, the U.S. officials and people briefed on the requests said. "At first there were eye rolls, but once they realized it was a serious request, the career guys were furious," said a senior U.S. official involved in the process.

2. Extraditing him would be murder, plain and simple. Turkey may be better than Saudi Arabia, but....

{Previous title, or close to it: "That's the guy who lives up in Scranton, Pennsylvania, right?"}

We might as well make it official that the country has no principles anymore.

7. Why do WE have to appease Turkey?

As a favor to the ones who sent us the vast majority of 9/11 hijackers?

18. The article says it's to try and get Erdogan to back off of Saudi Arabia for Khoshoggi killing

Unbelievable. He is willing to put a man to death so he can protect the Saudi Arabian tyrant from a dictator. Do I have this wrong?

15. How about KSA does something to Appease Turkey ... rather than the USA?

They could start by NOT MURDERING INNOCENT PEOPLE IN TURKEY ...

How about KSA also appeases the USA by NOT sending 15 of 19 hijackers to slaughter 1000's of innocent Americans?

IOW, FUCK THOSE GUYS.

16. I fucking knew it!!! I figured Erdogan, if anything would be jealous of what the Saudis

can do to their reporters. All along I've been wondering what he wanted in exchange to stop shitting on the Saudis. Now we know. And he now has "just the right" punk ass sociopath in the WH to do it for him.

17. Time to go!

Mr. Gulen should make an official request to Canada for political asylum, and he might want to do that now!!!

Honestly does anyone really think that Whittaker, Wray and Nielsen won't toss Gulen on a plane back to Turkey???

20. This is HORRIFIC

Mr. Gulden has been a legal resident for over 20 years. He fled Turkey because he proved that he would be killed in Turkey.

Seriously, I cannot think of ANYTHING more disturbing than even the suggestion from the WH to do this, much less doing it.

This sends the message to those here in the US, even after being here for decades, that they could be sent back on the whim of the WH for political gain.

This is very dangerous territory. There is no way this is legal. It sure as hell isnt ethical or moral.

This is the single greatest attack on immigration in US history.

Trump would have someone killed if he thought it would get a favourable report on Fox.
