Philadelphia election officials expect unusually high turn-out for Midterms

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- Preliminary indications are that voter turn-out will be unusually high in Philadelphia and Pennsylvania on Tuesday. States with early voting use that as an indicator of likely turn-out, but in Pennsylvania, new registrations and absentee ballots are the harbinger -- and they are way up over the last mid-terms.

In Philadelphia, registrations since the primary are up three percent with the total number of voters now 1,064,148. As for absentee ballots, 24 hours before the deadline, the city had received twice the total number it received in 2014.

Commissioner Al Schmidt says it's unusual because there are no real contested races in the city. “Normally competition drives turn out and in this case, in Philadelphia, we just don't have that,” he said. Schmidt says it appears national politics are driving interest, as they do in a presidential year. He doesn't think turn out will hit the 65 percent it did in 2016, but he thinks it will be larger than the 40 percent in a typical mid-term. “Everything we're seeing is pointing to higher turn-out, closer to 50 (percent),” he added.

Heard the above on the radio early this morning.

As a sidenote, there IS a gubernatorial election this year and I believe the turnout here was a bit higher than normal for a mid-year in 2014 because of the race for Governor and to get rid of Corbett (R) to replace him with Wolf who is a (D).

Also found this from a couple days ago. Good news!

Large demand for absentee ballots in Philly ahead of Tuesday's election

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Voters lined up in droves at the Philadelphia City Commissioner's office Tuesday to get an absentee ballot in time for next week's mid-term election.

Tuesday is the deadline to apply for an absentee ballot, and this Friday is the deadline to return it.

Lisa Deeley, the city commissioner, says the line at her office was as long as it was for the 2016 Presidential election, which surprised her since turn-out is generally lower during the mid-term. "The walk-ins have been consistent and constant," she said.

Sophie White, who won't be in town next Tuesday, was in line and didn't mind waiting.

2. Glad to hear this, but even 50%

will still lag other counties. If Philadelphians voted at 70+%, Dems would rarely lose any statewide elections.

4. Locking...

The consensus of Forum Hosts agrees, what is "expected" is not LBN, it's speculation and that this is local news. Please post your article in the General Discussions Forum and/or the Pennsylvania Group
