Oprah: If You Don't Vote, You're 'Dishonoring' Your Ancestors Who Couldn't

Source: Huffington Post

Oprah Winfrey on Thursday delivered a powerful message to attendees of a town hall in support of Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams: Don’t dishonor your ancestors by failing to vote in the midterm elections.

The media mogul invoked the story of Otis Moss Sr., who had walked 18 miles to vote in an election but was told he was too late to cast a ballot. He died before he was able to finally vote in the next election.

“For anybody here who has an ancestor who didn’t have the right to vote and you are choosing not to vote wherever you are in this state, in this country, you are dishonoring your family,” Winfrey said at an event in Marietta on Thursday.

“You are disrespecting and disregarding their legacy, their suffering and their dreams when you don’t vote,” she added.

1. I loved it when she said...."YOU get a vote, and YOU get a vote, and YOU get a vote"...

Unfortunately some here think she's just an "entertainment celebrity" and what she says and does is "not important news of national interest", but she's a VERY important spokesperson in this day and age.

2. Hopefully everyone who is now inspired is registered

My personal feeling is that these big endorses should come forward BEFORE registration ends. Hold these rallies and outside have experienced helpers at tables so no mistakes show up on their registration forms.

3. Oprah's right about voting, for all of us and black people especially.

What an unrivalled public figure to lend her support and powerful voice to Stacey Abrams campaign in Ga., and the critical 2018 election. It's wonderful to see her involved like this.

4. And by the way, that includes every single female citizen too.

We've only had the vote for 98 years. My grandmothers were among the first American women to vote in 1920. I'd like my granddaughter to be able to vote as well.

6. I thought about that, when listening to Oprah's speech.

I'm not black, but I'm female. I thought about all the women who persisted in fighting for women to get the right to vote.

If we don't use it, we might lose it. In a fascist country, that could happen.

9. This may be a little off topic, but I absolutely loved the arrangement of the seats on stage.

I loved when she and Stacey Abrams were sitting side by side, they looked so at home, making everyone else feel at home. It had such a different feel that any other stage setting I've seen, so much friendlier, so much like we're all in this together rather than listen to me and do what I say message that is all you get from normal settings. Now, I also loved when both of these wonderful women were at the podium saying powerful things to bring people together to make changes that are desperately needed I loved the whole thing from start to end.
