Treasury official charged with leaking records related to Russia probe

Source: CBS News

A senior Treasury Department employee was arrested and charged with leaking sensitive documents about figures connected to the Russia investigation to a reporter, the Justice Department said Wednesday.

Natalie Mayflower Sours Edwards, a senior adviser at the Treasury Department's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, known as FinCEN, was charged with disclosing "suspicious activity reports" (SARs) beginning in October 2017, the U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of New York said.

"SARs, which are filed confidentially by banks and other financial institutions to alert law enforcement to potentially illegal transactions, are not public documents, and it is an independent federal crime to disclose them outside of one's official duties," Berman said.

Prosecutors said Edwards leaked documents related to Paul Manafort, Rick Gates, the Russian Embassy and Maria Butina, among others. The information was used in approximately 12 news stories, according to the indictment.

Jared can sell military-security secrets that lead to the death of a journalist in a most gruesome fashion, without repercussions. You KNOW Erik Prince got some free intel as well. Thats Americas National Security being given to foreign officials for personal gain. Our agents gathered the info and developed the sources, and Jared sold them as if they were his possessions. Un-American.

Are you accusing DOJ of selective enforcement?

Let's be clear here. DOJ just nabbed someone at treasury who tipped off Manafort, Kushner, Butina, and others that they were under investigation for financial crimes related to the Trump Mafia.

And your complaint is?

I think Jared should be detained and questioned as well. American intelligence products arent produced for personal gain. It's developed to keep us all safe. Jared had a hand in this persons death.
Little people held to account. Trump family, scofflaws. Laws apply to us equally.

A spy is a spy is a spy, whether it’s one of ours or one of theirs. Calling it “leaking information” is whitewash for spying [espionage) when that information ends up in the hands of adversaries. But, so be it. Another average day in the life.

Employees at financial institutions ( many in lower level positions) reported suspicious activities like money laundering to FinCEN for further investigation. They did this with the expectation that the information would be investigated properly & confidentially, not placed on a flash drive to be given to the press.

I would think that those who sent in the SARS may now be in some jeopardy. How would you like to be someone who name was attached to initiating a SARS regarding the Russian Embassy?

The issue here had nothing to do with tipping off the perpetrators, but the release of confidential investigative materials
