Survey: Number of Children Not Vaccinated Has Quadrupled Since 2001

Source: The Daily Beast

Tens of thousands of young children in the U.S. have purposely not been vaccinated against potentially life-threatening diseases, a trend that health officials say has grown in recent years. A survey cited by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday found that an estimated 100,000 children born in 2015 and 2016 had received no vaccinations as of 2017. That figure made up 1.3 percent of children born in those years and is a fourfold increase from the 0.3 percent of children without vaccinations found in a 2001 survey. Health experts have said growing misconceptions about the safety of vaccines may be behind the increase in children not receiving vaccines. Amanda Cohn, a senior adviser for vaccines at the CDC, told the Associated Press: “This is pretty concerning. It’s something we need to understand better—and reduce.”

1. No surprise.

Look around you today, these morons that refuse to protect their children who cannot speak for themselves, are fucking stupid. No other way to say it.

3. other children

like kids with allergies or impaired immune systems, will pay dearly for other kids' parents' stupidity.

i think we are witnessing the fruition of the dumbing down of america. been going on since reagan. we're devolving as a people, moving beyond civilization in the wrong direction.

A perfect storm -- disease, famine, and poverty. And lots of guns.

16. I wonder if this has anything to do with health insurance issues.

To some uneducated folk, they're taking the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" attitude to spending money on health care when their child isn't sick.

Do the anti-vaxers typically fall on the political-left, political-right, or is it evenly mixed and distributed across the political spectrum?

I’m a perinatal nurse. People from both sides say they are not vaccinating their kids. Complete insanity.

15. There's generally a libertarian streak in the defense of this bullshit

so imho they are right wing, regardless of however 'progressive' they think they are in other ways.

Libertarianism is a dangerous right-wing philosophy in which one's individual choices are more important than the greater good. This overrides everything else they may give lip service to that falls in the left of the political spectrum including who they vote for.

23. My daughter is liberal, but Face Book is full of disinformation and outright lies...

She lost her little girl to SIDS at 6 months, and plenty of women on FB were willing to tell her it was due to vaccinations. It's like some goddamned cult that you can't get through to the members of. As a consequence, my oldest grandson has his head filled with this stuff about "fucking doctors" and babies being permanently injured the day they get their shots, and how my daughter and her growing group of friends can see this with their own eyes. God forbid I should try to ask questions like, "What do you mean? What are the symptoms? Is it a fever that will pass in a few days?" Nossiree, it's definitely neurological, and their vast medical knowledge gained online confirms it.

The middle child has never been vaccinated. The youngest was a preemie and had a very rocky start, but no evil needles for him except those in the NICU which were not vaccines.

Gosh, do I sound a little bitter? These are the only grandkids I will ever have.

After our fantastic Russian-assisted election debacle, I was not overly surprised to read that they have also been busy in the FB mommy communities spreading disinformation about vaccines as just one more way to divide us.

I'm so sorry to hear about this... what a horrible thing to have to go through. The tragedy is only made worse when her grief as made her mind so porous and willing to accept and believe the lies and disinformation. Of course, you have every right to be bitter, and concerned, and worried, and fearful. My heart aches for what you've been through.

And I’m in BC. Most people here are very progressive. And educated.

Neither of those always meant smart.

9. this is horrible

I was watching the news the other evening and they were saying how young children are experiencing paralysis and they don't even have a clue and no prevention, Drs. are stumped about it.

The parents don't realize that their children who do NOT get these vaccines can contribute to another child getting sick.

24. I have read about the paralytic disease that's not polio, and we knew one family 20 years ago...

...whose daughter was stricken. She was walking across the living room one day and just fell over -- has been in a wheelchair ever since, with no diagnosis except it's not polio. Then a few years ago I read of similar mystery cases popping up.

I don't know if this makes sense to anyone else, but part of me thinks there are opportunistic viruses looking for a niche, and polio being nearly gone, this one came along.

There was an outbreak in the US and Canada in 2014. Some cases resulted in a polio like paralysis

10. That's terrible!

People have easy access to information these days, but the problem is they also have access to a whole bunch of misinformation. Our biggest problem these days seems to be misinformation/propaganda. It's hard to fight that. We'd need to have a government that doesn't allow it, but we have a government that supports it, unfortunately. It works to the Republicans advantage that people believe in bullshit.

11. For a brief second, I thought maybe vaccines were bad when I was holding my first

as a tiny newborn. And then I realized how dreadful all those diseases were. Kids and self fully vaccinated. One injection injury to me. Injection. Not the vaccine itself. Small price to pay not to suffer from horrible, often deadly or debilitating diseases.

and are not vaccinated................and lets say a unit comes down with measles............or the unit goes over a foreign country and the person comes back with something" and spreads the bacteria or virus..................viruses like to mutate..................

And then there are the "celebrities".......................

They don't screw around. They add on whatever is necessary for whatever deployment is made to foreign lands, as well.

18. They have no idea

I'm in my late sixties, and had every damn one of the so-called "childhood illnesses".
Mumps and measles damaged my hearing, and left me with permanent tinnitus.
Chicken pox left permanent scars, and the potential for shingles at my current age.
Whooping cough nearly killed me. I still have nightmares about suffocation.
The Salk vaccine came along about two months too late for me. My mild bout with polio caused some mobility and strength issues, and is now beginning to come back.
At least I got the smallpox vaccination....

except polio. I was able to get the vaccine.

Growing up, I never attended a school or met a group of children where there was not at least one child or family affected by polio.

22. My sibs and I got vaxxed for smallpox, lockjaw, whooping cough, and diptheria...

We older two still brought home everything we caught to the baby in (iirc) her first year of life, which affected her health throughout childhood and I think beyond.

Fortunately, we managed to miss polio and were able to get the Salk vaccine. I was very young, but I remember the last big epidemic. Every single school I ever attended had a couple of kids clunking along in heavy leg braces.

I'm 61 and had red measles as a toddler but I didn't notice the tinnitus until 10-15 years ago. Drives me nuts.

25. I'd comment on this, but that would just bring the concern trolls out of the woodwork

like the filthy, disgusting cockroaches they are.

I try to be diplomatic with my adult patients.

But back when I was seeing pedes patients, and I got an anti-vaxxer parent, I'd tell them: "Get your kids vaccinated or get out."

If that sounds harsh, well, I did try to reason with an anti-vaxxer father once. Didn't do a lick of good. You can't cure stupid. I don't waste my always-elusive clinic time trying.

26. I grew up in the military crossing the Atlantic in the 50s and 60s

they immunize you against EVERYTHING. I have had some vaccines nobody
hears about much. I got a pneumonia vaccine last year and flu vaccines then and this year. I, and my siblings, and my kids (my husband was military also) had all the vaccines and a few others. Not a problem from any of them. actually it gives you a good immunity for other things also, I believe. We all rarely catch anything even colds. Never flu. I had the healthiest kids in the neighborhood!

Let people know you get shots and let them watch if you can. That should help.
