Scoop: Trump has accepted Nikki Haley's resignation
Source: Axios
President Trump has accepted Nikki Haley's resignation as UN Ambassador, according to two sources briefed on their conversation. The timing of her departure is still unclear.
What we're hearing: Haley discussed her resignation with Trump last week when she visited him at the White House, these sources said. Her news shocked a number of senior foreign policy officials in the Trump administration.
Background: Haley, the former governor of South Carolina, was easily confirmed four days after President Trump's inauguration in 2017.
She has overseen Trump's shift in dealing with the UN, including the U.S. exit from the UN Human Rights Council, which Haley called the organization's "greatest failure."

(14,618 posts)It's been reported already, so this makes sense.
The "leaked" story goes that she is singularly positioned to challenge trump for the nomination. She has supported him, but hasn't wed herself to his usual toxic positions.
Plus she is a "she". It's really the only chance the gop has to not get further slaughtered in 2020. If trump is at the top of the ticket, we could get veto proof majorities as well as the wh.
The real question is will they be able to convince (bribe) him not to run. The only way they can do that is with a pardon. It couldn't be pence. It has to be someone that couldn't be linked to russia or his other crimes in order to avoid the charge of corrupt intent. SCOTUS wouldn't overturn a pardon, but it would be messy.

Her leaving to run for the vacated Senate seat when trump appoints lg to Attorney General after firing the current asshole. graham's raving behavior was his application for the position. trump likes people who yell and act like baboons. That's why bolton will get the UN job.
Yes. haley is as woman. Yes, she is a minority. But she is still a trump supporting asshole. Don't fall for the smile. A woman who grins while her man (trump) misbehaves is exactly what republicans like. And haley knows it.

(25,816 posts)Were it not for the childhood nickname "Nikki", and the change of her last name, well, I'm not sure what. People would see her very differently were she Nimrata Randhawa. Especially Republicans.
It's like the experiments that have been done many times where college or employment applications are filled out with identical information except for the name. One obviously male, one obviously female. Or one obvious "white" and another obviously African American. Not sure if the experiment had done with other ethnic names. I shouldn't have to tell you that the white male names get the job, the interview, the admission offer far more than any other name. Again, with identical information, work history, references, and so on.
I find it scary that Haley buys into all the racist, sexist, misogynist Republican rhetoric. I often wonder how she sleeps at night. Or, come to think of it, how any sensible woman who buys into the Republican b.s. sleeps at night. Or how any gay person can possibly vote Republican. The phrase "cognitive dissonance" comes to mind.
She is not resigning from the U.N. because of any high moral stand. Nope. She obviously thinks she's got another great addition to her CV and will move on to the next thing. I wouldn't be at all surprised if she runs for President, but I find it very hard to imagine that any Republican at all will primary Trump. Sitting Presidents are rarely challenged in the primaries, although when they are, it often results in defeat for that incumbent in the general election.

President Trumps ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki R. Haley, has resigned, leaving the White House with one less moderate Republican voice on his cabinets foreign policy team.
Ms. Haley, a former governor of South Carolina, had been an early and frequent critic of Mr. Trump, so when he named her the envoy to the world body weeks after his election in November 2016, the appointment was seen as an olive branch.
The daughter of immigrants from India, Ms. Haley favored free markets and global trade and earned international attention for speaking out against the Confederate battle flag in the aftermath of the 2015 massacre at a black church in Charleston. During Mr. Trumps presidential campaign, she sharply criticized his demeanor and warned what it might mean for American diplomacy even suggesting that his tendency to lash out at critics could cause a world war.
In a January 2016 response to President Barack Obamas State of the Union address, she warned against following the siren call of the angriest voices, a clear rebuke of Mr. Trump.

(25,390 posts)Although Graham said yesterday that he has "zero" interest in a position on Trump's cabinet. But watch what Graham does, not what he says. And if Graham vacates his Senate seat, watch for Gov. McMaster (he was, after all, Gov. Haley's Lt. Gov.) to appoint Haley to serve out Lindsey's term (and run for re-election in 2020).
PRETZEL
(3,245 posts)Graham can stay as Trump's mouthpiece in the public without reprisal. He's safe for as long as he wants to stay as a Senator. Why would he want to take a position that may only last 2 years? He'll easily be confirmed if he did take the AG job but at that point, Trump loses an ally that is outside the administration.
And for what it's worth, my opinion on why she's leaving could be two fold. One, she's basically burned out. It's not all that uncommon for Cabinet level positions to leave mid term.

(29,616 posts)A watchdog organization is calling for an investigation into seven private flights taken by United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley that were paid for by South Carolina business executives.
The 2017 flights, which Haley listed on her public financial disclosure report this year, were between New York, Washington and three cities in her home state of South Carolina, where she was governor before joining the Trump administration. The watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington said the flights were likely worth about $24,000 and should be investigated by the State Departments inspector general.
By accepting gifts of luxury private flights, Ambassador Haley seems to be falling in line with other Trump administration officials who are reaping personal benefits from their public positions, Noah Bookbinder, executive director of the group, said in a statement. Our ethics laws are clearly written to prevent even the appearance of corruption and improper influence.

If she were a Democrat, you can bet she'd be toast by now. But the GOP won't bat an eye over free trips.
It seems she'll make her next move obvious after November, for now we just have to wait.

Watchdog wants investigation of Nikki Haleys private jet flights to SC
By Andy Shain [email protected] Oct 8, 2018
COLUMBIA A federal government watchdog asked the State Department on Monday to investigate whether U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley broke any regulations by accepting seven flights on private jets from three South Carolina executives last year.
Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, or CREW, also questioned how Haley values the flights on luxury private aircraft, most of which also included her husband, Michael.
The former South Carolina governor based the cost on first-class commercial airline tickets for the flights from New York to three South Carolina cities. Her total was $3,219.
But the four flights Haley took on a plane belonging to Jimmy Gibbs, chief executive of Gibbs International in Spartanburg, were alone worth up to $24,000 based on publicly reported operating costs of a private jet, CREW said.
Ambassador Haley should have been conscious of the appearance concerns surrounding her acceptance of gifts of private luxury air travel at a time when her colleagues in the administration were making news with their own lavish air travel, CREW wrote.

Could Ivanka possibly think she could be the ambassador to the UN?
Samspadesnark
(75 posts)They could use the UN to strengthen global mob ties and protect global mob activities, and just keep everything in the family. Sounds about right, sounds just about what they all think the UN should be doing instead of what its charter dictates (human rights, climate protection, the advancement of women, the protection of children, the promotion of world peace, the sanctioning of dictators).
After all, the mob is in trouble due to stepped-up criminal law enforcement, and the international spooks are concerned now that China has kidnapped the head of Interpol. So yeah, I could, in my more sinister moments, see this being the grand hope and design. And as an international diplomat, would Ivanka have the protections of diplomatic immunity to protect her in case she were, er, caught in any uncomfortable situation?
/sarcasm, total sarcasm/
And why is Ivanka following DOD accounts, anyway???? Is she the administration's eyes and ears behind the 'get rid of Mattis' movement? Disclosure: Mattis is the only person on the cabinet whom I trust (to not undermine the republic).
