Trump has decided to impose tariffs on $200 billion in Chinese goods in dramatic escalation of trade

Source: The Washington Post

President Trump has decided to impose tariffs on $200 billion in Chinese goods, two people briefed on the decision said, one of the most severe economic restrictions ever imposed by a U.S. president. An announcement is expected to come within days, the people said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to discuss internal plans.

The new tariffs would apply to more than 1,000 products, including smartphones, televisions and toys. These penalties could drive up the cost of a range of products ahead of the holiday shopping season, though it’s unclear how much.

Trump has ordered aides to set the tariffs at 10 percent, likely leading to higher prices for American consumers. These tariffs are paid by U.S. companies that import the products, though they often pass the costs along to U.S. consumers in the form of higher prices.

The U.S. imports roughly $500 billion in Chinese goods each year, and — combined with existing tariffs — these new penalties would cover half of all goods sent to the U.S. from China each year

In the French Revolution they didn't have money or food....but they did have guillotines.

I think as more and more people suffer more and more, we will rise up.

The French Revolution happened with the support of the middle classes. The sans culottes alone weren’t getting anywhere.

Be with your families if possible, exchange baked goods and handmade stuff instead of expensive electronics. Get by with the TV and computer you have if possible.

My family has in the recent decade been shunning buying high-ticket stuff (except reasonable presents for the kids) for the holidays, instead opting to wait for the inevitable Jan/Feb clearance sales. If TRMP sabotages the holiday season with his stupid dick-waving "fix the economy even though it's the best EVAR" antics, you know retail will be quite eager to unload the stuff later.

I want to retire in the next couple of years and it's scary as hell watching what this orange moron is doing to the economy. I'm terrified of being stuck working at a job I despise simply because Spanky ruined our economy to spite President Obama.

Once American consumers learn they can live without the latest technology and can survive with what they own for bit (last year's phone and tv are already still pretty damn good, etc.) the market sector will need more than a reversal of tariffs to recover. Items that actually need to be replaced will be, but those consumers will be upset at the increase passed onto them because of Trump's alpha make ego boosting tariffs. My conservative cousin was already upset when she had to replace her non-working fridge and noticed the price for even standard models had increased from a few months ago and no deals were being offered.

Um, the president doesn't impose tariffs. That's the purview of Congress but the kremlin's apparatchiks there have "loaned" tariff policy to trump.

and slyly apply it to his record deficit (due to his tax cuts for the wealthy) as a way of hoodwinking people into thinking the country can afford further tax cuts for the wealthy? I never found out what happened to those tariffs, which are nothing less than a tax on consumer goods (a double whammy on the average American).
I certainly wouldn't put it past him and Congressional Republicans. Another BIG LIE to fleece the American people.

Don’t worry. When the Depression comes, tRump will have a lot of money in the Treasury to stimulate the economy. Oh yeah, huge deficits and more tax cuts for the rich......I wonder if Putie planned it this way so he can witness the US falling just like the Soviet Union 30 years ago. And just think, if the economic turmoil makes foreigners less bullish on the US, maybe they’ll stop using the Dollar as the medium of exchange. When all those Dollars come home, we’ll have Weimar style inflation. That Putie thinks of everything.
