State Auditor Janssen apologizes, says he will make changes in 'personal and professional life'

Source: Omaha World Herald

By Paul Hammel

LINCOLN ó State Auditor Charlie Janssen, in a statement Friday morning, said he is taking immediate steps "to make changes in my personal and professional life" following a World-Herald investigation documenting short office hours and long lunches during work hours involving beer drinking.

The 47-year-old Republican said he was "not a perfect man," and acknowledged that The World-Herald story was accurate.

"I apologize to the citizens of Nebraska for some of my choices, and effective immediately I am taking steps to make changes in my personal and professional life," he said. "While I deeply regret my past actions, I urge citizens to look at the work we are doing in the State Auditorís Office."

The statement came in the wake of a World-Herald story documenting short working hours at his office, and long stays at a Lincoln sports bar. Over the past 20 working days, the auditor, on at least 10 of those days, had long lunches at the bar and was observed on five of those days drinking beer. The lunches often ran more than three hours in length.

5. "the work WE are doing"????

Maybe other people are.

The article says that his Democratic opponent, Jane Skinner, a part-time library worker, doesn't have money for yard signs. I guess he'll be reelected.

8. Only Dems resign.

If you have a "R" after your name, you:
- Deny, deny, deny,
- Blame others,
- Double down,
- Pretend that nothing really serious happened, but still ask for forgiveness and move on.

Unfortunately, with the general public, resigning makes you look guilty (even when you are) and weak.

11. I appreciate he has problems, but he should be fired.

Just as I would be, if I had done that.

14. Dude - you were elected to do a job - and now (after how you spend your time on the job)...

you are going to change? You have already how little you regard your public service responsibilities.

Too late. May the blue wave sweep you out. Probably wouldn't be at risk - if you hadn't taken your job (and pay) so unseriously in your first elected term.

16. What's the problem?

Who needs "auditing" if you're a puke legislature spending taxpayer money in a red state? We all know it just needs to go for tax cuts, anyway.
