Cuomo skates past Nixon to win New York primary

Source: The Hill

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) swatted aside a challenge from actor and progressive activist Cynthia Nixon Tuesday after a heated campaign in which Cuomo overcame his own stumbles in the face of liberal pressure.

Cuomo won the race with 65.9 percent of the vote, the Associated Press projected after 24 percent of precincts had reported. Nixon, who became famous after starring in "Sex and the City," got 34.1 percent of the vote.

Public polls showed Cuomo never faced a particularly difficult challenge. His lead in those surveys ranged from 22 points in a Quinnipiac poll in May, to 41 points in a Siena College survey conducted last week.

But Cuomo ran as if he faced a dogfight, running virtually non-stop television advertisements, soliciting endorsements from former Vice President Joe Biden and Democratic National Committee chairman Tom Perez and attacking his opponent in mail pieces.

1. I wish it would have been a campaign on the issues....

.... instead Nixon came right out of the box calling Cuomo corrupt, and from there it went downhill and into the gutter.

8. Yes, but she didn't do her homework. The MTA is a city entity, not a state entity.

9. You would be....very, VERY wrong

The MTA is a State Agency. The Governor makes all appointments to the Board (the Chair and 4 members directly, others based on nominations from NYC and County officials), and the State approves the Capital Program.

13. Actually from what I read and heard she was complaining about the subway system. when I lived there

years ago the subway system was owned and operated by the city and received some state aid. Is it different now?

14. The City hasn't owned the subway since 1968 when the MTA was formed.

15. see below:

But it's moot, the primary is over and although he isn't the best governor he is the most qualified of the two.

16. The City owns the infrastructure...

The State manages the operations, decides on fares and service levels, and determines the budget and Capital Program.

10. +1, yes, calling people corrupt was nasty and made

her look small and petty. Glad to see the rejection of her tactics.

7. I'm not impressed with either

Cuomo's support for the IDC and their caucusing with the Republicans was nauseating
On a positive note, most of the IDC appear to be on the road to losing their primary races
Simcha Felder (ass-17) is on tap to win both the Democratic and Republican nominations and will likely continue to caucus with the republicans
Friends of mine from the area said they are voting for the WF candidate since Felder is more a republikkan anyway and is the nominee of both parties (and rather conservative)
