Louisiana mayor bans Nike products from parks and rec

Updated 9:53 pm CDT, Monday, September 10, 2018

KENNER, La. (AP) — The mayor of a New Orleans suburb banned the city's parks and recreation department from purchasing Nike products, days after the athletic apparel maker released a controversial ad supporting former San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

The memo by Kenner Mayor Ben Zahn to the parks and recreation director says Nike products cannot be purchased for use at the city's recreation facilities. It also requires the director to approve all athletic purchases by booster clubs using their facilities. The policy sparked a backlash over the weekend with many calling for it to be rescinded.

Kaepernick ignited a firestorm in 2016 when he began kneeling during the national anthem as a way to protest police brutality and social injustice in America. He opted out of his contract after the end of that season and then has been unable to find a job with another NFL team. He's suing the league for collusion.

1. One would logically think this to be illegal.

Perhaps legal heads can chime in here, but doesn't this violate fair trade rules for government purchases? How can a city tell say, little league ball players what they can and cannot buy - so long as it meets standards of usability and safety?

One thing I know is perfectly legal: a few million Americans can protest and avoid visiting the city of Kenner, LA for a year or two - not even stopping for food or gas if passing through. That might remove those smug looks from their self-righteous faces.

3. I agree and I believe that I will email the City of Kenner

letting them know I will not be shopping in their town during my regular trips to the area. I can simply drive through and not bother with their town.

4. I was thinking the same

I assume there have to be very valid reasons to make policy to the disadvantage of one particular company. Especially in connection with seeing it as a punishment from the government for voicing an opinion.

Little minds feel so accomplished with stupidity that will most probably back fire...who elects these idiots? When Democrats regain power they have to work hard on education, a people with knowledge will never vote republican.

17. Isn't this a bill of attainder? (I'm not quite sure myself, but)

It's not specifically a law, but they are forbidding a certain company's products from a workplace for no good reason other than politics.

23. That would be a stretch.

Is refusal to buy a company's product "punishing" them without benefit of law? Since corporations exist to make a profit, you could try that argument, but I'm not sure it would fly. But lawyers and judges are a strange breed.

to buy whatever Chinese-made products they want......

Never ceases to amaze me the bullshit Republicans will propagate just to keep a hornet's nest of buzz going in their right-wing bubble of politics.

The shame of it all is - like tRump - they manage to gain a bully pulpit to stand on, and that our media grabs onto it like it's gold......

16. Story title is misleading but this Mayor is an IDIOT.....

Not sure how he could ban NIKE from bidding on certain things the Parks and recs would buy. It's suppose to be a competitive bid with the lowest bidder winning the contract. They could be dropped from the bid process if they had crap products but we sure as shit know that's not the case.

This FUCK needs to be voted out of office down there--or are Mayors appointed via the "good ole boy" system in New Orleans/Kenner?

Maybe enterprising vendors will set up their carts and make lots of money selling branded Nike paraphernalia. Nike's PR department should roll out the big trucks to New Orleans and do a free give away of their stuff.

Educate that ignorant Republican mayor on what it means to have rights that are held inviolate under our Constitution.

Zahn rescinds controversial Nike ban, says he never meant to be divisive

(snip)
Standing in Kenner’s Veterans Park, Mayor Ben Zahn rescinded his controversial anti-Nike policy Wednesday, four days after it erupted on social media and thrust Kenner into a national spotlight.

Zahn read a short statement and took a few questions in a brief appearance before assembled media, giving his first unscripted public comments since the memo enacting the policy became public.

Acting upon advice of the city attorney, I have rescinded my memorandum of Sept. 5,” he said. “That memorandum divided the city and placed Kenner in a false and unflattering light on the national stage.”

Poor Repug snowflake......
