Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who died on Saturday, will be buried at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., on Sunday, Sept. 2, following a week of memorial services commemorating his life.
McCain, 81, died on Aug. 25 after a yearlong battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer.
The Senate giant will be laid to rest next to his Naval Academy classmate and friend Admiral Chuck Larson, according to a schedule of events from his office. McCain graduated from the Naval Academy in 1958.
"As classmates at the U.S. Naval Academy and Naval Air Station Pensacola flight school, Senator McCain and Admiral Chuck Larson developed a close friendship that endured throughout their adult lives," the statement from McCain's office says.

(58,440 posts)this kind of travel is hell on a family in the midst of grieving.

(11,949 posts)But for the family of a senator as influential as McCain, travel is second nature.
They will not have to worry about finding the last decent priced seat in coach like I have when family members die. And that is no criticism. Just the way it is.
And I am pretty sure they came to grips with his fate before his actual death.
Lord, where we have come. We honor him on DU for his service. The super sad thing is we also honor him, despite disagreeing with him on almost every issue because he is the last honest republican senator.
Makes reading Shakespeares Julius Caesar more understandable.

(999 posts)McCain has a home in the Washington Area. The Naval Acadamy is only 30 miles outside of DC. The wait for the services is what makes it tough.
