Obama midterm endorsements seen as too little, too late by Dem critics

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by DonViejo (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Former President Obama’s midterm endorsement list is leaving some Democrats cold.

They argue the list of 81 endorsements came too late in the midterm season and failed to put Obama’s stamp on Democratic primaries.

Strategists, ex-Obama aides and even some of the former president’s fundraisers interviewed by The Hill say they were perplexed by Obama’s list, which came after most states have held their primaries.

“I think a lot of us have wondered why he didn't feel the need to get involved earlier,” said one former senior Obama administration official. “There are a lot of folks that could have used his help much earlier. And there are a lot of people who think he should put a stamp on the party.”

20. Gaucher, PRESIDENTS don't take sides in primaries,

playing favorites, upsetting supporters, and creating internal controversy for our enemies to multiply geometrically. It's inappropriate in principle and would be really dumb politically. Obama's both principled and smart, of course.

I admit I didn't read the article in the OP because the headline suggested contents ranging anywhere between really dumb to unprincipled troublemaking clickbait to a full-bore subversive agitprop attack on Democrats.

Also, I imagine you know, but so many don't ("OMG, why don't they DO something!!!!" ), that timing's huge in politics. Wrong time, best time for greatest effect, etc.

In any case, although there are still some primaries in August, most of the states are shifting into general election mode against the Republicans. Enter President Obama.

Who is complaining? I'd like to put them on my ignore list.

5. Somebody is pushing disruption. Ignore it.

Who cares if it is too little too late. Argue that one after Nov 2018 elections votes are cast.

At this point, the focus is uniting to get a massive Democratic vote for whoever won whatever Democratic primary. If they won a Democratic primary they need Democratic votes and as many other votes as can be gathered.

7. Obama shouldn't be involved in primaries,

so there's plenty of time for him to get involved in general elections.

He has to pick his spots, in urban areas and Democratic enclaves. He knows what he's doing.

9. Why should he put his stamp on the primaries?

Much better to throw his support behind who ever is running against the repub. If he picked before the primary and backed the dem who lost then what? Change sides? Much better to jump in after the primary and fire up people to vote dem.

12. Disagree in this context...

Almost nobody is influenced by the fact that a former President endorses nominees from his own Party. The impact comes in identifying candidates that presumably reflect the President's goals/ideology or are seen as stronger candidates for the GE.

30. This whole thread is divisive

And lord knows if he endorsed against your preferred candidate in the primary you would be here bitching about how he should not pick sides.

President Obama will keep his powder dry till it is time to fight republicans, not his fellow democrats.

16. Agreed, for the most part

But not even a written endorsement for ex-staffers? I can easily see why they’d be pissed. As the article said, it was used against them.

13. More unnamed anonymous sources. Nonsense, all of it.

President Obama wouldn't get involved in primary races. They're up to the voters. He'll be out there during the GE campaigns, though.

The Hill is not always a reliable source, and this article is a good example of why that is.

14. It's not that he endorsed people late IMO.

It's that he issued a press release, and has wandered back off to anonymity.

He's entitled to his privacy, but if he wants to have an effect on the Democratic Party, he's going to have to be a visible, active, participant. One tweet every 10 days isn't going to cut it.

It's damned if he did, and damned if he didn't.

17. Oh shit...and if he DID "put his stamp" on the primaries probably the SAME critics...

....would have complained that he should have stayed out of them until the general election campaign.

As far as the two specifically mentioned in the article, one lost 42-23 and the other got only 5% of the vote and finished 7th.

NO amount of enthusiastic support by Obama would have helped either of these enough to come even close to winning.

21. The closer we get to November, the more articles and Republicans through

corporate media will make the case that either Dems are in disarray or criticism of every body movement, criticism on issues, facial expressions, endorsements, socialist - yes or no, et al.

Be aware that the Republican party is pumping up more racial bullshit talk. NFL, but nothing on rallies of "White (KKK/Nazi) Nationalists.

Stay focus. Vote them out and hopefully meanwhile shithole will be solely submersed in defense of himself on total criminal charges.
