Swedish crown jewels: Speedboat thieves steal priceless treasures

Source: BBC

Police in Sweden have launched a manhunt after thieves swiped some of the country's crown jewels from a cathedral and escaped by speedboat.

Two priceless crowns and an orb belonging to a 17th Century king and queen were taken at around midday on Tuesday in Strängnäs, near Stockholm.

Witnesses said they saw two men running from the cathedral, which was open to the public and hosting a lunch fair.

The royal jewels are adorned with gold, precious stones and pearls, and come from the 1611 funeral regalia of Sweden's Charles IX and Kristina the Elder.

3. A close-up photo...

I hope they locate the objects before the thieves break them up, since they obviously won't be able to sell them directly.

10. Often there is a collector who commissions these types of thefts

because s/he wants the pieces for their own enjoyment.
So, I have some hope that won't happen.

Of course, it is a definite possibility that the breakup and melting might occur.

5. Maybe they are the same guys who stole "The Scream."

It seems Scandinavia has some brazen thieves.

Officials at the Munch Museum in Oslo had worried that the paintings had been damaged when the robbers, who threatened a guard at gunpoint in front of terrified tourists, removed them from the wall and carried them out the door like a couple of footballs.

6. Euros really lack the kind of security these would get if they were in the US

Makes it really easy to abuse the open trust and laxness their societies have. Those crown jewels weren't even heavily secure and were open to the public in the church.

7. I was at the Munch museum in Oslo a couple of years ago.

The security now is like at the airport. They now have metal detectors, screen bags through x-ray machines, and no backpacks or large bags allowed. Lessons are always learned the hard way.

9. The thieves had a getaway boat, more from People Magazine.

- Priceless Crown Jewels Stolen in Sweden — and the Thieves Had a Getaway Boat!, People, 5 hrs. ago

Swedish police are on the hunt for a pair of thieves who stole some of the country’s priceless crown jewels — and escaped on a speedboat, according to local media.
Two crowns and an orb — the 17th century funeral regalia of King Karl IX and his wife Queen Kristina — were stolen from a glass case at a cathedral in Strängnäs, which is near Stockholm, Reuters reported.

Swedish authorities also confirmed the theft in a press release.
The suspects were seen fleeing the cathedral in a motorboat across nearby Lake Mälaren, Reuters said.
Witness Tom Rowsell told local media, Aftonbladet, he was having lunch nearby “and one of my friends saw two people run from different directions. I saw a white little boat and the men jumped in the boat and gassed away.”

The jewels are decorated with gold, precious stones and pearls, marking “an enormous loss in cultural value and economic value,” Catharina Fröjd, a spokeswoman at Strängnäs cathedral, told Aftonbladet.

As the hunt continued late Tuesday, police spokesman Thomas Agnevik told Aftonbladet, “It’s 1-0 to them right now, but we do not know what it looks like tomorrow.” Agnevik added to Reuters, “What usually happens with this type of object is that they are recovered sooner or later, because there are very few people who are prepared to handle such items.”
>>He said that authorities have “high hopes” of retrieving the jewels.
