India strips 4 million of citizenship

Source: BBC

India has published a list which effectively strips about four million people in the north-eastern state of Assam of their citizenship.

The National Register of Citizens (NRC) is a list of people who can prove they came to the state by 24 March 1971, a day before neighbouring Bangladesh declared independence.

India says the process is needed to identify illegal Bangladeshi migrants.

But it has sparked fears of a witch hunt against Assam's ethnic minorities.

70 years later Cyril Radcliffe's pencil marks on a map are still killing people. He never set foot in Bengal at any point of the process.

was knighted for his efforts to draw the boundary lines.

Meanwhile, India's prime minister is Trumpier than Trump, and openly encourages bigotry and violence between religions (in the US it would be race). Gaining and maintaining power through dividing people against each other. Assholes.

Indian Bengalis are just like Bangladeshi Bengalis, just different religions. Same with Indian Punjabis and Pakistani Punjabis. Anyone would find it hard to tell the difference between them based on culture, language, food, clothing, etc. Just religion.

Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt who was born in Mumbai, India in 1993 is not an Indian citizen. Her mother is a British citizen. (Although her mother is of Indian ancestry) I think both Alia and her mother prefer to have a British passport and India does not accept dual citizenship. I know Alia would have to renounce her British citizenship, but don't know what else she would have to do to become an Indian citizen.

Alia Bhatt (pronounced [ɑ:ˈliːə bʱ?]; born 15 March 1993) is an actress and singer of Indian origin and British citizenship, who works in Hindi films

They have so many UK and Portuguese (and now, US) citizens of Indian origin that they make it easy for them to come back to India and live/work (or just take the retirement system of their new country).
