CNN Goes On Air With Story About Incident Against Networks Black Camerawoman
DAVID TAINTOR 5:50 PM EDT, WEDNESDAY AUGUST 29, 2012
On air this evening, CNN's Wolf Blitzer called attention to the network's earlier report on two Republican National Convention attendees throwing nuts at a black CNN camerawoman and saying, "This is how we feed animals." The attendees were removed from the Tampa Bay Times Forum after the exchange.
Blitzer called the incident "truly shocking" and said it "hit home" for everyone at the network. CNN political analyst Donna Brazile said during the segment she hopes the two attendees have their convention credentials revoked.

(4,243 posts)I think the two idiots who did this need to be publicly outed. If they were brave enough to do something like that in front of other people, they should be brave enough to stand by their decision to do it!

(61,331 posts)Let's see some journalism. Should not be that difficult to determine their identities, since the person they attacked was a camera woman. Cameras are usually accompanied by reporters. There must be witnesses.

But that's apparently way too much to hope for from our corporate McPravda. Perhaps a foreign press outlet will step up and do some real reporting?

It is revealing that the identities of the two "attendees" haven't been made public. The RNCC did call their behavior vile, which is good given the all the racist dog whistles by some members of the GOP recently. Releasing the names and affiliations of these two would go a long way to showing that the RNCC doesn't condone bigotry. That said, I'm not holding my breath waiting for them to do so.

(93,626 posts)Convention credentials are largely bearer instruments. The GOP will argue that someone's tags were borrowed / stolen / lost, and they're not responsible for whomever used them.

(8,053 posts)Being racist, obnoxious and offensive are not against the law. Remember that "first amendment" thing people like this are quick to throw out there? There's no law against bad home training.
Best thing she could have done was to have her camera rolling on the incident. It would substantiate her allegations. CNN's lawyers are probably looking at the footage and aren't going to release it immediately.

(6,001 posts)best that could happen from this is that this was caught on video and it goes viral, along with the names of the people who did it.

(8,053 posts)and they will swear up and down that it was a joke, someone bumped their hand and they lost their grip on what was in it and without witnesses coming forward and video to back it up, it'll be her word against theirs.

Which is a wholly different statement, in terms of both substance and format, than your previous statement of "there was no crime" And regardless of whether witnesses or tape exists, many prosecutions have indeed gone forward on less evidence...
SemperEadem
(8,053 posts)it's all in the same vein...
and plenty of prosecutors have declined to press forward on far more evidence--bush, cheney et al.

Look, I'm just as pissed if what she asserts has happened, but if she wasn't rolling on it or no one else saw it and will come forward, then it's her word against theirs. End of story.

(8,053 posts)her word against theirs without video tape or witnesses to back up what she alleged happened. Peanut kernels trampled under foot is about all there is right now. When the video is released or witnesses step forward, then I'll change my view.
And btw, the two attendees who allegedly did this were removed, but not arrested according to this link.

(8,053 posts)CNN Camerawoman "Not Surprised" by Peanut-Throwing: "People Think We've Gone Further Than We Have"
Source: Maynard Institute for Journalism Education
Patricia Carroll, the CNN camerawoman who was assaulted with peanuts and called an animal by two attendees at the Republican National Convention, told Journal-isms on Thursday that "I hate that it happened, but I'm not surprised at all."
-snip-
Carroll said no one took the names of the attendees who threw peanuts at her Tuesday on the convention floor and told her, "This is what we feed animals." She alerted fellow camera operators, producers and CNN security. The head of the delegation she was not certain of the state told her the perpetrators must have been alternates, not delegates.
But Carroll, 34, said that as an Alabama native, she was not surprised. "This is Florida, and I'm from the Deep South," she said. "You come to places like this, you can count the black people on your hand. They see us doing things they don't think I should do."
-snip-
"I can't change these people's hearts and minds," Carroll added. "No, it doesn't feel good. But I know who I am. I'm a proud black woman. A lot of black people are upset. This should be a wake-up call to black people. . . . People were living in euphoria for a while. People think we're gone further than we have."

Someone leaking the names of the assaulters would be great, too.
It has been said here before - it's not so big news that at any political convention, you have a few crazies, but the fact that the atmosphere must have made them feel *safe enough to racially assault a CNN team member* is the really big story here; it conveys the atmosphere of barely covert racism within that convention.

(7,111 posts)So they were delegates and not attendees?
Hopefully, what "hit home" for CNN was the realization of what they should have learned from the GOP debates months ago - that the GOP is a collection of lying, feral, rage-drunk armed bigots filled with fury, hatred, and colossally willful ignorance, and should be treated like what it finds stuck to the bottom of its shoes.
I can only hope. Wake up, Blitzer.

(6,891 posts)to try and dilute the impact of the incident by claiming it was "an ugly reminded that there' still an element of hate that still exists in our country." (not the Republican Party and the delegates at its convention) and that it was an "isolated incident" and "you can't blame the thousands of other people who were behaving beautifully." It was classic false equivalence Blitzer apologetics. I suppose that's what CNN pays him for.

She is a person, trying to do her job, and those bullies should have their asses handed to them. People in the GOP might pretend they accept diversity, but the ones I know personally do not, and I can't see them changing.

If they are officers in publicly traded companies we deserve to know as well, plus the ramifications on their employment. No ramifications, then I want to boycott that company but I don't know who they are. I cannot understand why CNN is hiding the identity of these two people. Where is the transparency?
