CNN Goes On Air With Story About Incident Against Network’s Black Camerawoman

DAVID TAINTOR 5:50 PM EDT, WEDNESDAY AUGUST 29, 2012

On air this evening, CNN's Wolf Blitzer called attention to the network's earlier report on two Republican National Convention attendees throwing nuts at a black CNN camerawoman and saying, "This is how we feed animals." The attendees were removed from the Tampa Bay Times Forum after the exchange.

Blitzer called the incident "truly shocking" and said it "hit home" for everyone at the network. CNN political analyst Donna Brazile said during the segment she hopes the two attendees have their convention credentials revoked.

Let's see some journalism. Should not be that difficult to determine their identities, since the person they attacked was a camera woman. Cameras are usually accompanied by reporters. There must be witnesses.

FOX is probably preparing a background hit piece on her.

It is revealing that the identities of the two "attendees" haven't been made public. The RNCC did call their behavior vile, which is good given the all the racist dog whistles by some members of the GOP recently. Releasing the names and affiliations of these two would go a long way to showing that the RNCC doesn't condone bigotry. That said, I'm not holding my breath waiting for them to do so.

Being racist, obnoxious and offensive are not against the law. Remember that "first amendment" thing people like this are quick to throw out there? There's no law against bad home training.

Best thing she could have done was to have her camera rolling on the incident. It would substantiate her allegations. CNN's lawyers are probably looking at the footage and aren't going to release it immediately.

CNN Camerawoman "Not Surprised" by Peanut-Throwing: "People Think We've Gone Further Than We Have"

Source: Maynard Institute for Journalism Education

Patricia Carroll, the CNN camerawoman who was assaulted with peanuts and called an animal by two attendees at the Republican National Convention, told Journal-isms on Thursday that "I hate that it happened, but I'm not surprised at all."

-snip-

Carroll said no one took the names of the attendees who threw peanuts at her Tuesday on the convention floor and told her, "This is what we feed animals." She alerted fellow camera operators, producers and CNN security. The head of the delegation — she was not certain of the state — told her the perpetrators must have been alternates, not delegates.

But Carroll, 34, said that as an Alabama native, she was not surprised. "This is Florida, and I'm from the Deep South," she said. "You come to places like this, you can count the black people on your hand. They see us doing things they don't think I should do."

-snip-

"I can't change these people's hearts and minds," Carroll added. "No, it doesn't feel good. But I know who I am. I'm a proud black woman. A lot of black people are upset. This should be a wake-up call to black people. . . . People were living in euphoria for a while. People think we're gone further than we have."

Someone leaking the names of the assaulters would be great, too.

It has been said here before - it's not so big news that at any political convention, you have a few crazies, but the fact that the atmosphere must have made them feel *safe enough to racially assault a CNN team member* is the really big story here; it conveys the atmosphere of barely covert racism within that convention.

So they were delegates and not attendees?

Hopefully, what "hit home" for CNN was the realization of what they should have learned from the GOP debates months ago - that the GOP is a collection of lying, feral, rage-drunk armed bigots filled with fury, hatred, and colossally willful ignorance, and should be treated like what it finds stuck to the bottom of its shoes.

I can only hope. Wake up, Blitzer.

to try and dilute the impact of the incident by claiming it was "an ugly reminded that there' still an element of hate that still exists in our country." (not the Republican Party and the delegates at its convention) and that it was an "isolated incident" and "you can't blame the thousands of other people who were behaving beautifully." It was classic false equivalence Blitzer apologetics. I suppose that's what CNN pays him for.
