Red-state Dem tells Schumer to 'kiss my you know what' on Supreme Court vote
Source: The Hil
Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin (W.Va.) had strong words for Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer’s (D-N.Y.) efforts to unify the party against President Trump’s Supreme Court pick. Manchin suggested to Politico that Schumer does not have any influence over whether or not he supports Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination. “I’ll be 71 years old in August, you’re going to whip me? Kiss my you know what,” Manchin told Politico, referring to whipping votes among the party caucus. Schumer has spoken out harshly against Kavanaugh and vowed to oppose him “with everything I’ve got.” Democrats will need at least two GOP votes, in addition to all Democrats, to block the nomination. But Democrats up for reelection in Trump states are not guaranteed votes against the confirmation, and many have signaled that Schumer’s efforts may not be enough to convince them to vote against the nominee. That quote is just Manchin asserting his “independence” from Schumer. That’s sort of an obligatory thing these red state Dems have to say. When push comes to shove he may come up w an independent reason to vote no on Kavanaugh. , time will tell. See this post below for a possible reason Manchin might have to vote no: https://www.democraticunderground.com/10142109450#post21 |

52. Repubs see Manchin's seat as in play -- a flip to red.
Manchin votes roughly half and half with Repubs and with us. If he loses to a Repub, that person will vote 95-100% with the Repubs.
When this particular Democratic senator publicly invites Schumer to kiss his ass, Schumer understands perfectly. |

Little reason to think Manchin would face any adverse consequences at the ballot box if he voted against him. Only evangelicals make a lot of noise about Supreme Court nominees.
And if by chance Manchin loses because he voted against confirmation? At least we got something for his vote. Just once. |

10. I think many Repubs besides evangelicals focus on the S.Ct.
That party focuses on that more than Dems do, IMO. The rural blue collar Repubs probably don't grasp the importance of it, but I'm pretty sure the rank & file middle class Repubs do.
He will vote how his constituents want him to. I heard on tv, as regards politicians doing the "right thing," that the name of the game for them is...to stay in the game. Thing is...will the Dems in his state not vote for him if he votes to confirm Kavanaugh? Why isn't Manchin worried about the Dems in his state? Is it because he knows they are more likely to let it slide than the Repubs? |
