Fresh from gifting an unwanted “kid size” submarine to Thai rescuers working to free children trapped in a cave, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has turned his attention closer to home – helping the city of Flint get clean water.

In response to a tweet requesting help for the Michigan city of Flint, Musk wrote that he will “fund fixing the water in any house in Flint that has water contamination above FDA levels. No kidding.”

Karen Weaver, the mayor of Flint, subsequently contacted Musk, co-founder of the electric car firm Tesla, on Twitter to talk about Flint’s “specific needs”. Musk has tweeted that he will speak to Weaver on Friday.

Mari Copeny, a leading Flint activist, tweeted on Thursday that she had been working with Musk’s team “for over a week” to find out the best solution for the city...More..

The lead contamination, which has likely hindered the development of children and triggered an outbreak of legionnaire’s disease that killed a dozen people, caused international uproar and has resulted in criminal trials for several city and state officials.

3. He doesn't need to make it public. All he has to do is donate the money Plumbers Local 370.

It really is as simple as that. Local 370 member have volunteered thousands of hours AND dollars repairing/replacing water lines into private homes. Members of 370 came up with the idea of pulling the lead lines from the homes back to the main along with a replacement safe water line. If he wants to help, get off the news and do it with a group that was there to help before anyone else was. Plus, they know how to do it.

4. Totally agree

it comes down to piping. what he means by 'any house' is not clear, that could mean filters, which is not a long term solution to the problem.

5. Precisely

but, I would be surprised if he would do anything that might come across as supporting anything done by a Union.

6. Amen!

So far we’ve seen this guy grandstand on trapped kids and now poisoned water. How about he stops talking and starts supporting those who are actually doing something to make a difference?

10. On the other hand, the local plumber's union doesn't get national press and Elon Musk does.

It needs to be heard far and wide that this country and Republican-controlled entities let this city down. They also let Puerto Rico down. They're letting affordable healthcare down. The plumbers deserve medals, but the world ought to know they're getting them.

7. Don't stop there, Elon!

The thousands of U.S. locales where lead poisoning is worse than in Flint

Yes, the U.S. government should have fixed all these by now but they've got big tax cuts for billionaires to pass and important "hearings" to hold and propaganda narratives to push.
