McCaskill polling supporters on Supreme Court decision

Source: Columbia Tribune

McCaskill in a Tuesday email asked campaign supporters to fill out a survey on the nomination of conservative Judge Brett Kavanaugh, noting that “with so much at stake, I need to know where you stand on this ASAP.”

The questionnaire doesn’t ask whether McCaskill should vote to confirm Kavanaugh. It asks participants which issues considered by the Supreme Court are most important to them: The Affordable Care Act, the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision on abortion, voting rights, net neutrality, immigration or something else. The survey ends with a request for campaign donations.

While McCaskill’s likely Republican opponent — state Attorney General Josh Hawley — quickly threw his support behind Kavanaugh, the incumbent senator is holding off on announcing a decision. She risks alienating Trump supporters she hopes to win over by voting against Kavanaugh, but she could upset her Democratic base if she supports him. Hawley started hammering her on the issue even before Trump announced his pick.

“I look forward to thoroughly examining Judge Kavanaugh’s record in the coming weeks as the Senate considers his nomination to replace Justice Kennedy,” McCaskill said in a Monday statement.

10. Chill out

It’s one of those “questionnaires” that directs you to a fundraising page after you answer.

That's fine with me.

2. Once it's clear what Collins and Murkowski will do....

Red State Dem Senators should decide.
Do what helps them keep their seats unless a No on Kavanaugh is needed to stop him.

4. I see what you are saying..if there is no chance to defeat him, save yourself.

Not sure how those red state democrats have helped the democrats in any way.

If they vote repuglican 100%, they are NOT democrats, just DINO's

12. "Not sure how those red state democrats have helped the democrats in any way."

You know the ACA passed in the Senate without a single vote to spare, right?

And no ...they don’t vote with Trump on every issue.

15. Red State Dems will never get a single RePutin vote.

So the only viable option is to not infuriate their Dem voters. The choice is simple.

3. no is the only option

I can’t imgine a trump supporter voting for her because she would vote to confirm. On the other hand she will de-enrgize the base, no dem will be enthusiastic to vote for her, will hold their noses at best. It will be hard for dems to pull off a massive gotv if she votes yes, not to mention soliciting campaign donations. Also, I doubt independent voters are thrilled with this judge.

5. some consultants might think a Kander-trump voter might vote for if she's a yes vote

Kander lost to poppy blunt by about 4% while trump won by nearly 20%

6. She is very smart and knows how to survive in this

very red state. We need her to win she is very good on health care and veterans issues. She will stay with the dems unless it is a lost cause.

8. The Only Answer for Her are the Voters Who Have Not Usually Voted

Claire McCaskill had better be standing up and the unlikely voters, like those who came out for Ocasio, had better come out in droves.

9. That's a fundraising gimmick

You vote and it takes you to a fundraising page. Let’s look for something else to get upset over.

11. This is a wise decision.

She will vote no... but she is conveying that she listens to her constituents.

16. Her number one issue in this campaign needs to be removing Trump for violating

the Constitution. That's all she needs to run on to win a swing state like MO. Like others have said, this is all going to come down to bringing in new voters and more typical non-voters here in MO are anti-Trump than pro-Trump.

19. Trump won Missouri by nearly 20 points.

Making his removal the cornerstone of her campaign might not be the best idea.

17. She's going to fold.

"I need to know where you stand on this..."

No. WE need to know where YOU stand.

I know she's up for re-election, and it is Missouri, but she's going to fold. She's another one like Collins, Murkowski, Donnelly, Heitkamp, Klobuchar, Manchin, etc.

Not that it matters; if Kavanaugh goes down there's another Reich-wing fanatic waiting in the wings. Who may be worse. Far worse. Unless the D's are ready and committed to block EVERYY TRump nominee...?
