MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The Philippine president, who recently sparked outrage for calling God stupid, has courted new controversy in his largely Roman Catholic country by saying he will resign if anybody can prove that God exists.

President Rodrigo Duterte, who has had a thorny relationship with the church, questioned anew in a speech late Friday some of the basic tenets of the Catholic faith, including the concept of original sin, which he said taints even innocent infants and can only be removed through baptism in a church for a fee.

“Where is the logic of God there?” Duterte asked in a speech at the opening of a science and technology event in southern Davao city.

The 73-year-old leader said that if there’s “one single witness” who can prove, perhaps with a picture or a selfie that a human was “able to talk and to see God,” he will immediately resign.

Many or most of the Filipinos I've met are not just Catholic: they're devout Catholics, and very traditional in their practices and beliefs. . . though, given the bizarre alliances of politics and religion in our own country, and our own overall twilight-zone political nightmare, I really should give up expecting anything to make sense anymore.

Questioning a teaching of the church such as original sin leads to the question of the legitimacy and reliability of the teaching body.

I suggest that maybe he would also deny the existence of numerous others which lack a contemporary facebook cover or selfie posted on the net. George the VI, Julius Caesar, Martin Luther... Further more, would he assert the since one can neither "talk to nor see" air, that air doesn't exist?

I think anyone with anything above a room temperature IQ can see through that level of BS and realize that this "dud" (duterte) has removed himself from the set of humans which have common sense and intelligence.

not that i'd expect Duterte to keep his word, but it would be fun to watch. i really doubt he would have any idea how to handle Aquinas' arguments, old and worn as they may be. but Duterte might just ragequit and pull a gun, so probably for the best they'll never meet.
