Obama declares emergency in Louisiana (guess Jindal's response)
Source: AP
President Barack Obama declared a state of emergency in Louisiana on Monday as that state and others along the Gulf Coast prepared for Tropical Storm Isaac.
The White House said Obama informed Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal of the emergency declaration in a phone call. The declaration makes federal support available to save lives, protect public health and safety and preserve property in coastal areas.
Jindal, a Republican, shot back late Monday in a letter to the Obama administration that the declaration fell short of the help he was requesting.
We appreciate your response to our request and your approval, Jindal wrote. However, the states original request for federal assistance .... included a request for reimbursement for all emergency protective measures. The federal declaration of emergency only provides for direct federal assistance.

(454 posts)he's not president of just the people who vote for him, so I'd say being generous is not the appropriate term.
On the other hand, these phuls spent the last three years telling everybody that the President is not doing his job. Agreed, generous is a bad word to use, but, showing a little integrity might be a better description.

(7,769 posts)Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-LA) reemerged on the national stage yesterday, penning an op-ed in the Politico to slam efforts to reform health care and declaring the Economic Recovery Act a failure.
Jindal declared the Recovery Act a nearly trillion-dollar stimulus that has not stimulated. However, less than 24 hours before Jindal published his op-ed, Jindal traveled to Anacoco, Louisiana to present a jumbo-sized check to residents of Vernon Parish.
The funds included hundreds of thousands of dollars directly from the Recovery Act at least $157,848 in Community Block Grant money authorized by the Recovery Act and $138,611 for Byrne/JAG job training programs created by the Recovery Act.
Rather than credit the federal government or the Recovery Act he opposed, Jindal printed his own name on the corner of the massive check. View it below:

(7,402 posts)Jindal should have a "rainy day" fund set up to cover a substantial part of these expenses. The federal government should only be the "super cat" for an event like this. Maybe Jindal should be talking to Speaker Boehner who insists on cutting the FEMA budget for events like this. Instead he comes off as a whiney, ungrateful jerk. No more blank checks Jindal. Start pulling your own weight for a change.

>
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) warns Isaac could reach category two strength, with top winds of 100mph (160km/h). The forecast was revised up from category one.
President Obama approved Louisiana's request for a federal disaster declaration, making available federal funds for recovery activities such as clearing debris.

(42,239 posts)The NHC said that at 02:00 EDT on Tuesday (06:00 GMT), Isaac was centred about 145 miles (235km) south-east of the mouth of the Mississippi river, with maximum sustained wind speeds of 70mph (110km/h).
The storm is moving forward at about 12mph and storm winds extend out about 205 miles (335km) from the centre.
The NHC warned that wind speeds could reach between 96-110mph before the storm makes landfall.
"Significant storm surge and freshwater flood threat expected," said the NCH. It said Isaac was expected to become a hurricane on Tuesday and would continue to strengthen until it made landfall.

(290 posts)I was not impressed with Jindal when he spoke in 2008 shortly after President Obama's win, and I'm still not impressed with Jindal now.
Mr. Jindal makes no sense. He was first to say that he would not accept any federal assistance when President Obama announced stimulus money to the states even with the aftermath of Katrina. He speaks against the Medicaid proposal so states would receive 100% assistance for the first 3 years with it tapering each year thereafter. Hardly, the sound of a governor who is concerned about the people living in his state. He speaks loudly against, but he takes the money. What a show of hypocrisy.
And now he says he wants more money? Reimbursement for all emergency protective measures. What is wrong with him? He is a another gem in the eyes of the Republican party????

(53,771 posts)Repug Jindal, he of the small government, yet he shoots back at the President for even more assistance. Typical repug. Mouth off constantly about the need for smaller government and less government interference but as soon as the needs hit his hand is out. Guess what Jindal, that's what government is there for, to provide the safety nets for those that need it. Take a look at your party platform. It's trying to cut government emergency response. What a hypocrite!

(999 posts)As far as I know FEMA gives the money directly to the citizens in need either through loans or temporary housing and food. This is a stop gap measure until the insurance companies step in and pay. I think that Bobby wants the feds to pay Louisiana the money so he can direct where it goes. Also he won't have to pay the state workers from state funds. Bobby is a grifter plain and simple and I hope that Obama federalizes the Louisana National Guard so that they fall under federal jurisdiction. Screw you Bobby.

(54,368 posts)Cobble together a string of videos with Jindal spurning Stimulus money and other forms of Federal assistance, and then play them together in a string.
Then Obama comes on camera, and says, "so, Governor, which is to be? Do you spurn the help I've been trying to send to your state for the last three and a half years, or don't you? The people of Louisiana are facing yet another hurricane disaster, and they do not have the time to wait for your politically motivated grandstanding. Put your cards on the table and tell the people of your state: do you want the help I've been trying to get for Louisiana all these years or don't you? It's an answer you owe them. And know this: I will do my best to help the people of Louisiana with your help or without it. Your call."

(377 posts)Folks in Louisiana and Mississippi have Pastor Jesten Peters and her followers to thank for sending Tropical Storm Isaac in their direction. Isaac had threatened to disrupt the Republican National Convention in Tampa this week, but Pastor Peters stepped in to save Republicans from a PR nightmare:
We have had lots and lots of people praying around the clock that it would move and if you watch from the very beginning where they were saying its coming and now where theyre saying its going then it has really moved out of the way for us and we appreciate God doing that and moving it for us.
