Ex-White House ethics chief: Sarah Sanders tweet violates ethics laws

Source: The Hill

The former director of the Office of Government Ethics said on Saturday that White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders’s decision to tweet about being kicked out of a Virginia restaurant violated ethics laws.

“Last night I was told by the owner of Red Hen in Lexington, VA to leave because I work for [President Trump] and I politely left,” Sanders tweeted. “Her actions say far more about her than about me. I always do my best to treat people, including those I disagree with, respectfully and will continue to do so.”

Walter Shaub, the federal government's former top ethics watchdog, tweeted that Sanders's response, which was made from her official White House account, was a clear violation of federal law.

“Sarah, I know you don’t care even a tiny little bit about the ethics rules, but using your official account for this is a clear violation of 5 CFR 2635.702(a),” Shaub tweeted Saturday, referencing the law that states government employees cannot use public office for private gain.

you say...I have heard you say to some in the WH press pool "I know it is difficult at times to comprehend more than a one word sentence" - or something to that affect...just the other day when challenged regarding the immigration action by your POS boss..

Now, that is me being polite....

Obviously if Hillary mixed up personal and professional stuff we all know it would lead to nine investigations.

But with the Russian mob now running things violating a quaint ethics law is not even going to get noticed.

"If Hillary Clinton had won the election, which, thank God she didn't, but if she had... she would have fired Comey immediately."

I doubt the Comey part is true. She certainly would have been right to fire him, but more likely she would have waited for a DOJ review. Regardless, what a nasty way to talk about your president's former opponent. "Thank God she didn't."

Who does that? Certainly not a person who treats people respectfully.

she denied the hefty SHS from getting fed! That right there is disrespectful. I applaud the owner and employees of this restaurant for following their principles. For the daughter of a so called "man of the cloth" Sarah has quite a mouth on her. Lesson here is "Do not, ever, prevent SHS from eating". Hey, Sarah have your boss include double orders of everything from McDonalds and KFC, so you can eat in peace.

That still doesn't answer my question about what did she do that was not ethical. Specifically what did she do. Don't just give me the document, but what part of it is illegal and how what she did was unethical. Serious question, I really want to know.

is where is her private gain? And there is no way to say she did what the ATF agent did.

What you gain does not have to be physical. A good rule of thumb is to only use your official account for official business, which this clearly was not. I think any ethics watchdog would note that this tweet was for "private gain".

The solution is for her to tweet from her personal twitter account, not the government account. The government account is to be used solely for official business, which this clearly was not.

non-endorsing a restaurant.

I don't see it. She just said she was tossed out which was true. She didn't urge people not to go there or boycott them. Of all the ethical violations in Washington, this one wouldn't make the top 100,000.

Who’s going to do anything about it? Who has done anything to enforce the shredded emoluments clause, and on, and on, and on? Laws designed for a purpose are being ignored intentionally. Law and order is under seige. So now what? Nothing will come of it.
