Charles Krauthammer, Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist and intellectual provocateur, dies at 68

Charles Krauthammer, a Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post columnist and intellectual provocateur who championed the muscular foreign policy of neoconservatism that helped lay the ideological groundwork for the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, died June 21 at 68. The cause was cancer of the small intestine, said his son, Daniel Krauthammer. He declined to provide further information.

"I believe that the pursuit of truth and right ideas through honest debate and rigorous argument is a noble undertaking," he wrote in a June 8 farewell note. "I am grateful to have played a small role in the conversations that have helped guide this extraordinary nation's destiny. I leave this life with no regrets."

A star of page and screen, Dr. Krauthammer (pronounced KRAUT-hammer) was one of the highest-profile commentators of his generation. In addition to his syndicated weekly column in The Post, which garnered him a Pulitzer in 1987, he was a marquee essayist for magazines across the political spectrum, including Time, the New Republic, the Weekly Standard and the National Interest foreign policy journal. He also was a near-ubiquitous presence on cable news, particularly Fox.

By any measure, Dr. Krauthammer cut a singular profile in Washington's journalistic and policymaking circles. He graduated in 1975 from Harvard Medical School -- on time, despite a diving accident that left him a paraplegic -- and practiced psychiatry before a restless curiosity led him to switch paths. Instead of diagnosing patients, he would analyze the body politic.

...The Iraq War was an abomination and completely unnecessary. It was the wet-dream fantasy for the PNAC crowd in their lust to be "New Rome." Estimates say up to a MILLION innocent Iraqis were killed. Tens of thousands of American soldiers were killed or maimed. And the destabilization of the entire region gave us ISIS and "the Caliphate."

I won't grave dance, but I certainly won't shed a tear.

We are dealing with Fascist NAZIs....otherwise known as Republicans.

We CANNOT.....and MUST NOT....be the opposition of "higher Ideals" or some such shit.
These criminals are destroying our democracy and way of life. While I respect Michelle O and her opinion of "Going High when they Go LOW" is a waste of time. We are in the fight for our very existence as a democracy. 250+ YEARS OF A BETTER UNION!!!!

Think about that...We are fighting for the preservation of the American Experiment. Dotard is ACTIVELY trying to destroy our democracy and nation.

We are not very far from Dotard cancelling the election in Nov 2018. Dictatorship follows. Think about it....

Insidious disease that I would never wish upon anyone friend or foe. I never agreed with the positions this man planted his flag on but it is always saddening to read that someone has been diagnosed with it and sad to read that they lost their battle with it.

R.I.P. Mr. Krauthammer.

as much as I disagreed with him, I have seen way too many of my friends/family taken by cancer. I derive no pleasure in his demise.

but, his paragraph about 2 years ago on Trump was pretty much a perfect description of Trump's psychology, in my opinion:

This is beyond narcissism. I used to think Trump was an 11-year-old, an undeveloped schoolyard bully. I was off by about 10 years. His needs are more primitive, an infantile hunger for approval and praise, a craving that can never be satisfied. He lives in a cocoon of solipsism where the world outside himself has value — indeed exists — only insofar as it sustains and inflates him.


I've never gloated over anybody's death here on DU, or IRL, and I won't start with Krauthammer. May he rest in peace. His family has my condolences.

I would like to share a story about Charles Krauthammer.

In October 2016, my dad met Krauthammer and Robert Reich at a thing in Washington. I'm not sure exactly what the thing was, but they chatted for awhile after. My dad's a geek for this stuff, so he got a photo and posted it to Instagram.

I don't have a thread unrolling app and don't want to put too much into the text, but it was a nice story on him
