TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) The federal government is considering another attempt to drop legal protections for gray wolves across the lower 48 states, reopening a lengthy battle over the predator species.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on Thursday told The Associated Press it has begun a science-based review of the status of the wolf, which presently is covered by the Endangered Species Act in most of the nation and cannot be killed unless threatening human life.

If the agency decides to begin the process of removing of the wolf from the endangered species list, it will publish a proposal by the end of the year.

"Any proposal will follow a robust, transparent and open public process that will provide opportunity for public comment," the service said in a statement to the AP.

2. Owning the libs is the only conservative ideology remaining. Well, that and traitorous profiteering.

This owns me. Attacks on endangered species and plans to sell off wildlife habitats fill me with quite monstrous rage.

4. I thought conservation was a Republican thing.

This is ridiculous. Do people want to hunt wolves that badly?

7. Teddy hunted the fuck out of megafauna

that's why he wanted it conserved. So he could kill it.

10. Teddy knew that it would ALL go away if we don't protect it.

And he was absolutely right about that.

13. Probably because

They can't kill "evil libtards" so they take their aggression out on animals. Assholes. Wolves are my favorite animal

5. Wonder how many folks understand what is

behind this. This has been one of the NRA and so called Sportsman Groups go to things. All about the money. Like the Hunting Permits in Montana for Bison grazing on BLM land outside Yellowstone Boundaries. This is big Bucks business.

Watch for legalizing Wolf Hunts with ATV's and Dogs.

11. I have been fighting the good fight to return wolves to their natural habitat

in Minnesota since 1972. We finally have the population back to a sustainable and managed number. This makes me absolutely livid. On my way to my senators' websites as I type this to request that this be added to the fight to preserve our Boundary Waters area. This makes me want to declare war on tRump's DNR! Scientific review from a tRump run agency, I think not!

12. We've learned so much about canine social behavior from wolves

I've been reading about some of the science done with wolves - they are fascinating. Their lives are complex. We humans are not alone on this earth, we share it with other intelligent, social, sensitive beings.

14. Yeah well...

Wolves don't vote, contribute to political campaigns, buy condos, or golf. Thus, to a certain segment of the populace, they're not important enough to consider.

The ranchers who occasionally lose animals to predation by wolves, on the other hand, do at least one of those things. Some of the wealthier ones may do more than one.

So I'm not shocked the powers that be are less than concerned about wolves. To some folks, if they can't use it for money, power, or both, it's expendable.

15. Too infuriating for words...

Although, if I read between the lines, it may mean US FWS is trying to stall until after November elections.
And anything that is truly science based won't support this action.
So maybe a faint hope. There are some good people in FWS, some of them even live amongst the cowardly morons that support this kind of action.
