Corey Stewart, Confederate symbols defender, wins GOP nomination in Virginia Senate race

Source: CNN

Corey Stewart, the bombastic conservative who built his public image on championing Confederate symbols, won the Republican Senate nomination in Virginia.

Stewart, a member of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors, defeated state House member Nick Freitas and minister E.W. Jackson in Tuesday's primary. Freitas conceded the race Tuesday night, according to local media. He now faces Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine, the party's 2016 vice presidential nominee and a heavy favorite for re-election, in November's midterm election.

Stewart launched his Senate campaign after surprising -- and alarming -- national Republicans by winning 42.5% in last year's gubernatorial primary against former Republican National Committee chairman Ed Gillespie.

He made Charlottesville's push to remove its statue of Robert E. Lee the centerpiece of his campaign for governor, holding rallies for the monument and displaying Confederate flags while defending "heritage" at his events. He attended a news conference with the leader of the white supremacist protest that later resulted in the death of a counter-protester in Charlottesville. And after that counter-protester, Heather Heyer, was killed in a hit-and-run, Stewart blamed the violence on "both sides."

1. People like Stewart won't be happy till we're back to plantations with black slaves working on them.

What twisted fucking ignorance ... and it's 2018!

5. The Bolling and Walsh tweets are telling

Bolling, by all accounts, had a very good chance of becoming Governor (McAuliffe won) but their party avoided a primary and had a convention/caucus to Nominate Cuccinelli - The Cooch. That was a drastic turn for them.

Stewart is just embarrassing. I say that, obviously, as a Democrat. Very embarrassing for the Commonwealth.

8. A good comparison, yeah.

Good enough to win his primary, but far too damaged to win a general.

Kaine will need to put in the time and effort and take it seriously, of course. But as long as he does those things, he should win. Democrats got a real break with him winning.

11. Yeah. All 3 Republican Senate candidates were

considered unlikely to beat Tim Kaine, but Stewart was the worst of the 3 since he's an unabashed white supremacist. Now he's going to wreck down-ballot races and there are at least 3 Republican seats that could flip blue. Comstock, Brat, and Taylor.

Born and raised and even went to law school in St. Paul.

10. Plenty of 'northern Confederates'; Va.'s Repub. David Brat is from Michigan

although he's into finance; I don't know about CSA allegiances.

14. He must despise Minnesota's progressivism.

Could have just crossed the river to Wisconsin, though. No need to go all the way to the south.
Seriously, this statewide win for a blatant racist is sad.

12. Considering Virginia's 2017 Election

This racist pig doesn’t have a chance.

Why?

Gov Northam won due to African American women voters.
Lt Gov Fairfax is second African American to win a statewide election.
Virginia’s statehouse almost won a Democratic majority by 1 seat.
Hillary Clinton won the state in 2016 by 5 points.
Virginia’s Senator Tim Kaine was the former Mayer of Richmond, Lt Gov, Gov, DNC Chairman, and also a former nominee for Vice President.

Virginia is Blue.
