Bernie Sanders Praises Trump-Kim Summit: Overall 'A Positive Step'

Source: Mediate

by Josh Feldman | 2:27 pm, June 12th, 2018

The historic meeting between President Trump and Kim Jong Un has been met with cautious optimism and outright skepticism by members of Congress.

Lindsey Graham came down on the side of cautious optimism today, while Bob Corker was a little more skeptical, saying “it is difficult to determine what of concrete nature has occurred.”

Meanwhile, Democrats like Nancy Pelosi have been more critical.

Bernie Sanders said in a statement the meeting was “light on substance,” but still an encouraging step:

While very light on substance, Trump and Kim Jong Un’s meeting is a positive step in de-escalating tensions and addressing the threat of North Korea’s nuclear weapons. Congress has a key role to play in making sure this is a meaningful process, not just a series of photo ops.

211. maybe, and it wouldn't be any more right. I defended what Feinstein said about Trump, and I'm no big

fan of Feinstein, and I certainly detest Trump. But we can't and shouldn't play the game the the GOP does, that if Trump says the sky is blue then it must be purple. That partisan hackery is embarrassing. Sometimes he's going to do something quite by accident that isn't horrible. We can't pretend in those moments that that action was the wrong one.

144. He put Trump in a positive light while children are being put in concentration camps in

Texas...better to have said nothing. It isn't a positive first step. Trump was played and is doing Putin's bidding. Say what you will but why never a kind word for Democrats from Sen. Sanders but Trump gets the benefit of the doubt from him? I don't understand. But I do know it will be played on every TV station tomorrow especially Fox...and will help Trump sell the Singapore con.

3. "Light on substance"?

Trump has agreed to cancel joint US South Korean preparedness drills without one word of warning--let alone consultation--with our allies South Korea or Japan. That sounds pretty fucking substantial to me. He's praised one of the most ruthless regimes in the world, while denigrating our allies (who happen to be democracies).

He did nothing to address the threat of NK's nuclear weapons, while undermining South Korean and Japanese confidence in our value as an ally.

Again, that sounds pretty fucking substantive to me.

He also snuck in "de-escalate" which is a helpful reinforcement of a peace-making process (such as what United States police forces need/must learn.) We're all in general agreement – along with Sanders. Why "escalate" political divisions among progressives?

Why is everyone picking on a man who has worked ceaselessly to raise the nation's consciousness about the rigged economy? Yes, everyone on the left knew that the 1% has bought out the Republicans (and some Democrats), but B. Sanders aggressively hammers home the message like no other politician since the New Deal.

Pick on a Republican, kids. You're going to drive me to the schnapps....

193. If you think Bernie can't handle some criticism here on DU without you scolding people

what does that say about your confidence in his ability to handle being a Senator?

And in all his years as a career politician, he's not as accomplished as relative newcomer Elizabeth Warren.

https://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/18/us/politics/18warren.html

Yelling and wagging one's finger isn't the same as actually doing something about it.

When a politicians' ambitions swell to the Oval Office, so does the scrutiny in equal measure.

You may want to get used to it.

Having said that, he has done several things I've disagreed with since losing the primary battle to Sec Clinton and this one is a big screw up.

So, no, he nor Sec Clinton, President Obama or any other is going to save me. Yes, he has lost my support and respect now.

But I think his statement expressed both his belief that it's positive for them to be talking rather than threatening nuclear war and that the meeting lacked substance.

It certainly was not nearly as critical a statement as the ones from Schumer and Pelosi (and others), that's for sure.

43. I'd pretend criticism is bashing as well.

The oppression of a sacred cow being criticized for a less-than-stellar remark weighs heavy on all our hearts. The next time Sanders' own words are quoted, we should wear sackcloth and cover ourselves in ash.

We paint an enabling, un-thought out statement as pretty as we can (e.g., reasonable) and then dramatically advertise our petulance when our self-fulfilling prophecies come true.

'Sacred cow' is more and more becoming an apropos and accurate observation of far too many people who are otherwise rational.

Though after reading it several times, I confess to not really knowing what that might be other than that I'm possibly a Sacred Cow, or Bernie is, or both, it's hard to say. Sen. Schumer was more astute: "We've legitimized a brutal dictator who's starved his own people." I'm glad that at least ONE of our fine Senators is willing to be HONEST and TRUTHFUL and to criticize Trump and this administration. All I'm saying here is that it serves NO good purpose for anyone to flatter Trump by characterizing the meeting as "a positive step."

Sen. Schumer:

"It is worrisome, very worrisome that this joint statement is so imprecise. What the US has gained is vague and unverifiable at best. What North Korea has gained however is tangible and lasting ... We've legitimized a brutal dictator who's starved his own people."

rump took no notes, had no documentation, claims he remembers everything that happened. Really?

This is not the way to run a meeting between two former adversaries that many thousands died on both sides in the Korean conflict. All we have is rump's word since he only went in w/ a translator. That's it.

Congress has already shown it is worthless in getting anything done, and I don't expect anything here to get done either, as a check to rump's possible promises to NK, or anything else. Like Corker said, it's difficult to see if anything was done of substance, and I agree.

Using this kind of rationalizing and relativism, one could also argue how "positive" it is that a convicted child rapist is now only being accused of kidnapping.

but I'm not going to hope Kim fires a nuke so we can say trump is a failure.
I don't believe that ANYONE here is hoping for that.

Senator Schumer's response and analysis is the only correct one. "Trump has legitimized a brutal dictator who's starved his own people" (and murdered his own family members). This wasn't a "step in the right direction" it was a misstep... it was a mistake.

if only for a short time.

Look, as far as I am concerned, if trump enacted healthcare for everyone, dramtically reduced income inequality, a guaranteed income, strict gun control, bolstered our safety nets, and more, I'd still detest him as a racist, misogynist, lying, greedy, bigoted white wing fool who pandered to ignorant white wing voters.

As to Sanders, he helped elect trump as far as I am concerned.

But, that doesn't change the fact that reducing nuclear tensions in Korea is the right thing to do.

He coughed that up for free to Kim and got nothing in return and Sanders praises it.

129. Come on. Is that really swooshing over your head? That's a bargaining point...

to negotiate with Kim to agreed to something—say verification of destruction of nuke test sites.

Does this really have to be explained? And it just came out trump also agreed to stop the sanctions without getting anything for it.

Nothing hawkish about knowing how to negotiate what's already in existence in exchange for what you want.

You don't just give key things away.

131. I think you miss the fact that this was not a negotiating summit. It was to arrive at

an agreement in principle with a country that has been isolated for over 50 years.

Christ, no President or Dictator sits down and hammers out a detailed agreement. Obama didn’t get into the weeds with the Iran agreement, Paris Accord, TPP, etc. That will take months, maybe years.

But at least the nukes aren’t about to fly right this minute.

NK out. Christ, I’m a trump despiser too, but I don’t want to destabilize the world to make trump look like a fool. He does a good enough job of that. On this matter, I’m glad he softened his position. We didn’t give up a damn thing that matters.

150. That's one way of looking at it. Another is he foolishly gave away two key bargain chips that he...

could've gotten something from NK for. North Korea gave away nothing and got two things from trump. And it it was just a preliminary meeting why is trump coughing up things already?

I hate to think what he else he gave away in the one-on-one with Kim with no one else to witness, and what else he'll give away in future negotiations

Not smart.

and we didn’t lose anything.

I also think, even with a few points for the “summit,” trump — and us — is still a loser over the past few days for his performance in Canada, announcing admin would not defend pre-existing condition aspect of ACA, etc.

I am hopeful a Democrat will get elected in 2020 and take relationship with NK to next level, including human rights.

I do wish we had someone other than trump as our Prez involved in this, but he's what we've got right now. I prefer the trump who is not threatening “fire and fury,” to the trump who is. That's not supporting trump or Little Kim.

72. The top 15 Democratic presidential hopefuls for 2020, ranked (Washington Post)

1. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders

Another list; another Bernie at the top. Until he signals he may not run or gets into real trouble, Sanders has the best chance. But that doesn't mean he's got great odds. Given that we could see 15 or even 20 serious candidates, I don't see the front-runner having any more than a 20-25 percent chance of winning. And if things started today, that's where I'd put Sanders. (Previous: 1)

"Money & Media"...there it is.
Bernie is not the image he's been marketed to be.

He will never be the Dem nominee. Why would we select him when we have many loyal proud qualified Dems of our own to choose from?
His charade is revealing itself & he's not even an afterthought when it comes to Dem candidates for 2020.

Its over for bernie. Face it whenever you're ready.

It's best to just add you to Ignore because I'm not the one to guide you to the reality of bernie sanders.
Today was the final straw for many who may have given him some credibility.

"This is what sanders claimed a positive step"??
"Trump coddled a tyrant and abdicated American ideals with his praise. He weakened America’s standing in the Pacific and accomplished nothing"

107. Four problems with that poll

First, it's old.

Second, it shows Biden jumping into a significant lead over Sanders.

Third, it shows Sanders slipping badly.

Forth, respondents had to choose from a limited list of names, which may well not correspond to who will be in the primaries when they start.

That poll does not at all support the idea that Sanders is likely to be the nominee.
