Democrats turn to Hollywood for messaging help

Source: Politico

LOS ANGELES — The Democratic National Committee and members of Congress are turning to Hollywood for help with voter turnout and messaging ahead of the midterm elections and 2020 presidential campaign, quietly consulting with a group of actors, writers and producers here.

DNC Chairman Tom Perez, several House members and other top elected officials have already met with the group, formed by members of the entertainment industry in the wake of the 2016 election, that participants liken to a TV writers’ room, complete with producers of such programs as “Veep.” The existence of the group and details of the meetings have not been previously reported.

The group has discussed targeted voter-registration programs with visiting Democrats, as well as the party’s framing of issues ranging from abortion rights to gun control. In one recent meeting, a Midwestern senator sought advice about how to discuss gun control with conservative-leaning voters in his or her state, multiple participants said.

Participants declined to identify the senator or other elected officials who have visited.

2. Easy. Get Corporations and Billionaires to Buy Fox News and Sinclair Broadcasting...

...then have these networks work 24/7 to recite your talking points and cheer lead you even when sound totally insane. Rinse and repeat.

3. I think this is very good news

Outside help, from people who do it for a living. Lots of experience. We don't frame messages perfectly. We don't repeat enough. We use logic instead of controlled repetition and posturing. We need imaging.

33. We can expect....

the GOP to make an issue of this though. I can hear it now: "Democrats turn to 'Hollyweird' for ideas, because they have none". Or something quite similar to that. This could backfire. I hope not, but it could.

15. Exactly!!! Often the democrats do long winded things and whatever they said is forgotten. Bush used

short catch phrases as did Trump. If you want to catch those with a short attention span it's great, but also it sticks in your mind, a jingle one can't seem to stop hearing. I think this is an excellent approach.

35. That's why the GOP has Frank Luntz.

Master of the focus group and talking points. He did a lot of work for Bush the Dumber against McCain in the primaries, and he's worked for the GOP for decades, really. They always have good talking points, we can't deny that.

I agree with Bill Maher, going high doesn't work with them. The Dems need to be more like DeNiro and put some passion into the fight.

25. About Damn TIME they started focusing on this.

Just woke up and smelled the coffee, 'eh? Hope what they're smelling by now is not a burning house.

I've long wondered - "where is our Frank Luntz?" And why hasn't the DNC hired cognitive linguistics professor George Lakoff?

https://www.facebook.com/pg/GeorgeLakoff/about/?ref=page_internal

Here's a sample of Lakoff's thinking, "HOW YOU HELP TRUMP", about how many Dems, progressives, and the media help spread his message, WITHOUT REALIZING IT.

Think about it: every time Trump issues a mean tweet or utters a shocking statement, millions of people begin to obsess over his words. Reporters make it the top headline. Cable TV panels talk about it for hours. Horrified Democrats and progressives share the stories online, making sure to repeat the nastiest statements in order to refute them. While this response is understandable, it works in favor of Trump.
When you repeat Trump, you help Trump. You do this by spreading his message wide and far.

(snip)

Quick: don’t think of an elephant. Now, what do you see? The bulkiness, the grayness, the trunkiness of an elephant. You can’t block the picture — the frame — from being accessed by your unconscious mind. As a professor of brain science, this is the first lesson I give my students. It’s also the title of my book on the science of framing political debates.
The key lesson: when we negate a frame, we evoke the frame. When President Richard Nixon addressed the country during Watergate and used the phrase “I am not a crook,” he coupled his image with that of a crook. He established what he was denying by repeating his opponents’ message.

https://medium.com/@GeorgeLakoff/how-you-help-trump-9d0139b9d4c9

And notice how trump consistently repeats things - his standard pattern is a rate of at least three times in one breath. And that's usually just the initial set of repetitions. He'll follow it up a sentence or two later with more of that repetition. WATCH and LISTEN. Any time he brings up that other dreaded "C-word," "collusion," for example.

Sweet Jesus, Mary, and Joseph do we need help with messaging! Yeah, it's superficial as hell, but that's the level at which we're forced to meet, appeal to, and win majorities of voters. The best ideas in the world will fall flat if they're not delivered carefully, cleverly, and strategically. The bad guys have shitty ideas but great messaging, so they have an effective delivery system to reach and appeal to voters with those shitty ideas. Our Dems are in the exact opposite position: the best ideas but shitty messaging. Sometimes even nonexistent messaging. THAT has to change - like yesterday. Like maybe a decade or five before yesterday.

Communicate well. They desperately need help with this and with how to get multiple Dems to deliver the message consistently. If the creative artists can help, that is great news.

39. We do need to work on messaging.

And Lakoff would be a tremendous asset if we gave him an official role.

I am “concerned” that this project in the OP will be among elites only, when part of it can and should be crowdsourced. The more minds working on this the better. The cream will rise to the top.

36. Trying the Same on Twitter

I've been so frustrated by our elected officials and MSM recently. I think we're at a tipping point and I don't see the urgency reflected by many of the pundits and many of our Dem leaders. Today, I actually closed my business early and started tweeting talking points and tips in my frustration. Sadly, most of the hashtags at Twitter are pretty anti Dem. Only bright spot is my Congressman liked one of my tweets. Anyone have thoughts on hashtags to use or create?

37. Branding

It's a concept business mastered, then Republicans. Democrats are just now catching on. The fact the term "Hollywood" is used to describe the effort is an example of branding.

Many of America's most creative and prolific people work in "Hollywood" and that's why it is a gigantically successful industry.

Of course their help is welcome and something the GOP fears like the plague. They have absolutely no ounter to a media assault from media professionals.

Kinda makes them wish they hadn't assaulted the media for cheap applause at every Trump tent crusade. Revenge is a dish best served cold.
