Trump makes Manchin top target for midterms

Source: The Hill

BY ALEXANDER BOLTON - 05/17/18 06:00 AM EDT

President Trump is making Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) a top target this fall, underlining his drive to protect the GOP’s Senate majority even it if means going after a relatively friendly Democrat.

Trump told Republican senators in a closed-door meeting Tuesday that he plans to spend significant time campaigning against Manchin, who represents a state won by the president over Hillary Clinton by 42 points.

One GOP senator said Trump promised to visit the state “several times.”

The president touted his popularity in Manchin’s state, even joking about moving there if he loses reelection in 2020.

1. "Manchin pledges not to campaign against fellow senators" - From Feb 6

Sen. Joe Manchin III is encouraging Senate colleagues to join him in a pledge — to “return civility” to politics by pledging not to campaign against each other.

4. Count me as a Manchin supporter

There is no more Trump friendly and Democratic hating voters in America, than West Virginia.

I know Joe Manchin has been vilified here at DU for some of his Moderate and even Conservative votes. But count me as a pragmatic Liberal Democrat. The best we can hope for in a state like West Virginia is a Moderate Democrat and until we can change the minds of a majority of WV voters, let's not try to change the mind of a Democrat who will lose his or her seat if he or she does.

Politics is Math first, Philosophy, second.

I would think that we have all learned that lesson from the two assholes, Ralph Nader and Jill Stein.

10. Except when there is 65 million votes as opposed to 63 million

Then I guess it's OK to throw math out the window.

12. I wasn't around when the Electoral College was written into the Constitution

It's still math, but it's electoral college math, not popular vote math that wins the day.

I don't agree, but that's a fact of political life.

13. Fact of political life

Like your other post, and I reluctantly agree. Manchin often infuriates me, but I wouldn’t hesitate to vote for him, support him, and even send him a few $$ if I lived in WV.

9. Agree

WE may not like Manchin very much, but he is very popular in West Virginia, where many voters are still registered Democrats even though they vote for Republicans. Manchin is definitely the best Democrat we can get in WV. If he loses, that seat will go Republican for the foreseeable future. We have to keep our eyes on the prize: at least 51 seats!

And there ARE Democrats who resonate with the people of WV. It's a mistake for Democrats to write off that (or any) state entirely. We don't have to appeal to Trump voters, but we should still fight for every possible vote by appealing to sleepy Democrats who feel they've been ignored, and left-leaning independents. Writing off a state completely is the reason why Trump won by 42 points.
