EXCLUSIVE: Comey Has Brought On Former U.S. Attorney Pat Fitzgerald As One Of His Lawyers--updated

Last edited Tue Apr 24, 2018, 09:51 PM - Edit history (1)

Source: Talking Points Memo (Chicago Sun-Times update)

Fired FBI Director James Comey has retained former U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald as one of his personal attorneys, bringing in a heavy-hitting former prosecutor, close friend and longtime colleague to help him navigate his dramatic role as a potential witness in the investigation of President Trump’s campaign and potential obstruction of justice.

Two Capitol Hill sources independently confirmed to TPM that Fitzgerald was serving as a lawyer for Comey.

The hiring adds an additional twist to President Trump’s recent decision to pardon Scooter Libby, Vice President Dick Cheney’s former chief of staff, for his role in the Valerie Plame affair.

Comey, then the deputy attorney general, was the man who authorized the special counsel’s investigation into “the alleged unauthorized disclosure of a CIA employee’s identity” in late 2003, the case that eventually led to Libby’s conviction for perjury and obstruction of justice. His choice for special counsel, the prosecutor who got the guilty verdict on Libby, was none other than Fitzgerald.

Funny how tRump can’t hire top drawer lawyers while Comey has some of the best.

Eta: The Chicago Sun-Times has this headline James Comey says Patrick Fitzgerald has been his lawyer ‘since I was fired’
Ousted FBI Director James Comey told the Chicago Sun-Times on Tuesday that his longtime friend and former U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald has been on his legal team for nearly a year.

“He’s been representing me since I was fired,” Comey said at a Washington, D.C., reception Tuesday evening, signing copies of his book “A Higher Loyalty.”

The political blog Talking Points Memo first reported Tuesday afternoon that Fitzgerald was representing Comey to help him “navigate his dramatic role as a potential witness in the investigation of President Trump’s campaign and potential obstruction of justice.”

Comey told the Sun-Times that Fitzgerald is part of his three-member legal team that also includes David Kelley, a former deputy U.S. attorney under Comey in New York, and Dan Richman of Columbia Law School, another former federal prosecutor.

All that hype and the only conviction was Scooter, whose sentence got commuted.

happened in July 2016. I know I was furious at him then and wrote several harsh posts about wanting him fired for violating the Hatch Act and Justice Dept policies. It takes an Asshole like Trump, to make you realize who the real enemy is that we need to rally behind to deal with Trump, and right now we have to make sure Comey's integrity is kept intact since he may ultimately be a witness in an Obstruction Case. We can't let the Repugs destroy his street cred with their bullshit, baseless attacks.

With Manafort, Papadopoulos, Pinedo, and Van der Zwaan already having pleaded guilty, and an issuance of more than 100 criminal counts against 19 people and three companies, it seems the presents have already been coming relatively steadily... regardless of whether its Father Christmas of merely Mummy and Daddy getting them for you.

Though I can readily empathize with the low-calorie bumper-stickers... it's often the best information we posses.

Trump has the very best lawyers.

Its pretty funny that with all of trumps connections, and strong arming, he cant even come up with one high power lawyer. It speaks to how much everyone secretly hates him, even those who are his public allies.

He's friends with Mueller. Trump has been getting away with a lot of crap over the years. Somebody at the FBI or elsewhere have been letting Trump off. Just like Bulger and others.

If I recall Fitzpatrick shelved the investigation because there was too much sand in the air.
Bush did not pardon Libby because then Libby could not plead the fifth. Now Pat could reopen the investigation and Libby would have to testify. Whoever got Dummy to pardon Libby did not
do Cheney any favors...
