Royal baby: Duchess of Cambridge goes into labour

The Duchess of Cambridge has been admitted to hospital in the early stages of labour with her third child. Catherine and the Duke of Cambridge travelled to the Lindo Wing at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington, in central London on Monday morning. Catherine has been on maternity leave since making a last royal visit to a charity lunch in London on 22 March.

The baby will be fifth in line to the throne and the Queen's sixth great-grandchild.

The birth will be announced with an email to the press and a celebratory tweet posted on the Kensington Palace Twitter feed. There will also be the traditional custom of placing a framed paper proclamation on an ornate gold stand behind the iron railings of Buckingham Palace.

1. Royal baby name: What is the third child likely to be called?

As the Duchess of Cambridge goes into labour with her third child, speculation continues about what the baby will be called.

With Arthur, Albert and Philip among the current bookies' favourites for a boy and Mary, Alice and Victoria for a girl, it appears the public expect the royal couple to opt for a traditional name, rather than something more left-field.

But experts say there is a chance the ultimate name choice might also reflect the Middleton side of the family.

For their first two children, the Duke and Duchess chose traditional options, seen as a tribute to previous members of the royal family.

George Louis Alexander was a nod to six former kings, as well as Lord Louis Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of India.

Meanwhile, Charlotte Elizabeth Diana reflected William's mother and grandmother.

3. Charlotte is the feminine version of Charles , thus a tribute to Williams father.

Fun fact: Both Prince William and Prince Harry were born at the very same hospital where the Duchess has been admitted.

5. That makes sense, I don't know why I didn't think of that!

I just thought it was a decent name - didn't Chelsea Clinton also name her baby Charlotte? Kudos to them for choosing names their children can live with. Too many try to be "original" or unusual these days and the poor child is stuck with something awful - or unpronounceable. Just recently someone was telling me about a child's name with a "-" in it, which was actually pronounced as "dash." That poor kid.

6. I do believe that Chelsea Clintons daughter is named Charlotte as well.

I like traditional names. My child is named after his grandfather and his middle name is my (Iím his mother) last name. Giving your child a family last name as a middle name is rather traditional here in the South.

I donít like creative spellings of traditional names.

Poor Dash could be mistaken for Hyphen! 😳🤭🙄

9. I know, parents really aren't doing their children any favors when they choose something unheard of

Just to be "different." It makes things tough for the kid. A friend of mine was telling me about her sister who was substitute teaching and when she was taking attendance, there was one name she just couldn't figure out so she kept skipping over it. Finally, that name was the only one left and a little girl started crying. It had a hyphen or a dash or an apostrophe in it - and I forget now what it was, but it was definitely one of a kind. Maybe it was the poor child with the "dash..."

16. Perhaps apocryphal, but the "dash" story is...

...that the name was spelled La-a, with the mother's intent that is be pronounced LaDasha. Good luck with that!

Years ago, I had a little patient whose name was spelled Jerome. Pretty straightfrward looking, right? Wrong. Mom pronounced it Jeremy = Jer-O-mee. She would get pissed when people didn't get it right, which was pretty much always, but you can't just make up spelling rules to suit yout own ego needs.

18. Oh dear. Its tough if kids have hard to pronounce names.

I worked on the 2000 Census. In one student apartment complex, I met 7 different young ladies all with different spellings of Stacey! Who knew?

4. Charlotte was named for Prince Charles

Thus, Prince William's father, grandmother, great-grandmother, and mother (and Catherine's middle name is also Elizabeth) were referenced by Charlotte.

In any case, best wishes to Princess Catherine for a safe and easy birth of a perfectly healthy child.

7. She's actually Princess William

or Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.

Putting "Princess" before her first name is an indicator that one is a princess born, or a blood royal. Which she is not.

10. That makes sense now that I know it

And they certainly have plenty of names to choose from - so many that they traditionally choose several so they don't leave anyone out. But they do appear to be nice people, I credit Princess Diana for raising down-to-earth and decent kids. And I wish the same for Princess Catherine. she seems like a lovely person as well.

2. I had to click on the article to even know who the Duchess of Cambridge is.

Yes, I know who Kate Middleton is, but I'm far more familiar with her actual name than her silly title.

8. She is no longer called by Catherine Middleton since marrying Prince William.

She has taken a married name. In this British royal marriage case, she takes her husbandís name. She is titled Her Royal Highness Princess William, The Duchess of Cambridge.

She is styled as HRH Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge.

She is titled as a Princess of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland by marriage. Thus, she takes her husbandís name, William. (Princess William.) However, since her husband was made a royal duke by the Queen upon his marriage, Catherine is styled as HRH the Duchess of Cambridge and not as HRH Princess William.

She is not titled or styled as HRH Princess Catherine because she was not born as a member of the British royal family.

However, her children are titled and styled as HRH Prince George and HRH Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.
