Starbucks manager leaves company after calling police on two black men

Source: The Hill

BY AVERY ANAPOL - 04/16/18 02:13 PM EDT

The manager of a Philadelphia Starbucks who made headlines for calling the police on two black men has left the company.

A company spokeswoman told the Philadelphia Inquirer the manager left the job "while there is an internal review pending."

A video filmed by another customer went viral, showing the police taking the two men away in handcuffs. The store manager called the police because the men had not ordered anything while waiting for a friend to meet them.

The district attorney’s office said that there was no evidence of a crime and declined to file charges against the two men.

25. Yes, expected. After all, two of her customers spent

9 hours in jail for the crime of being Starbucks customers while black. The DA's office found “it was completely inappropriate to engage the police.” Damning.

Interestingly, Starbucks' chief operating officer, the "the buck stops here" person dealing with this stuff, is a black woman, although national disgrace has also caused their CEO to step in. Starbucks will now be educating its managers on "unconscious bias." Philadelphia's police commissioner, involved in this after it blew up of course, is also black. Not all civil rights marches are up boulevards.

35. When this story popped,

first thought was, what the hell it this. Worked with Starbucks for 15 plus years as a Jobber . Our Sales Reps, and Direct sales Persons had direct contact and inter action on a quarterly basis. Diversity was and most likely is still key to their Image.

When one pays five Bucks for a cup of Coffee,it better be a darn good cup of Coffee.

BTW,the number one Jobber for Starbucks is just a few blocks down the Street from the mentioned Starbucks Store.

37. Interesting, and certainly goes with my image.

Starbucks is too urbane, targeted at too urban and diverse a clientele, to behave like Denny's.

4. Yeah, I guess he would. It's a low pay job, and now there's an internal review.

Job doesn't pay enough for that. If he acted outside of company policy, he probably would have been fired, anyway.

She or he could find another job for about that pay grade. And work less hours.

20. The avg teacher salary in PA is over $60k. I think any mgr for public eateries works a lot more

than 50 hrs a week. It's not uncommon for them to work 80 to 100 hrs/wk. But I don't know about Starbucks, specifically. The H of a friend was a mgr for a Bonanza type restaurant. He worked often 7 days a week, long hours each day.

I worked 7 days a week for two years straight. But I didn't have to buy pens & paper for my job!

11. These two men could have lost their lives over unjustifiable reasons that day

So many people of color have lost their lives needlessly due to similar circumstances. It is time to start prosecuting these so called people being scared of black men due their own racism. As a person of color I will never use the assistance of the police regardless of any circumstances I may find myself including potentially losing my life because they might end up killing me anyway. That is how deftly afraid I am of the police and of 'white' people calling the police on innocent black people. God help us.

17. Like, if two people are sitting there without ordering...

they should be given the benefit of the doubt. Let them wait for their companion(s). This is so common it isn't funny. I go to places all the time where I have to wait for someone or where someone is waiting for me. It's not a police issue. If you think it is, you shouldn't have a job.
Sheesh. Good riddance!

24. I think it really depends on a number of factors such as how long were they sitting without ordering

as well as how crowded was the place at the time.
I have not seen the video myself but in general if its crowded and other customers who have ordered are unable to find a spot to sit down and enjoy their food and or drink then I can see a manager asking someone who has not ordered but has been there a significant amount of time and is taking up a spot to leave and if they refuse I can also see them calling the police.
If however there was plenty of open seating for customers and I was the manager I would have probably spoken to them and asked them why they had not ordered and then if they told me they were waiting for a friend I would have probably just let them wait but again that is just me.

31. good analysis.

I didn't watch the video either, but the key thing for me was how busy was the store? If the store was packed I would have given them an opportunity to buy something but if not, I would ask them to leave.

30. Yeah...

Apparently the only way this can be made right is if the former manager loses all her worldly possessions, is thrown into the street to starve, and is totally ostracized by society. I've seen a few calls for that in different places around the web. I guess some folks aren't familiar with the doctrine of proportionate response.

So being detained for 9 hours for sitting in a Starbucks is a proportionate?
