Rod Rosenstein Personally Approved F.B.I. Raid on Trump Lawyer, Officials Say

Source: New York Times

WASHINGTON — Rod J. Rosenstein, the veteran Republican prosecutor handpicked by President Trump to serve as deputy attorney general, personally signed off on Monday’s F.B.I. decision to raid the office of Michael D. Cohen, Mr. Trump’s personal attorney and longtime confidant, three government officials said.

The early-morning searches enraged Mr. Trump, associates said, setting off an angry public tirade Monday evening that continued in private at the White House as the president fumed about whether he should fire Mr. Rosenstein. The episode has deeply unsettled White House aides, Justice Department officials and lawmakers from both parties, who believe the president may use it as a pretext to purge the team leading the investigation into Russia meddling in the 2016 election.

Searching a lawyer’s files is among the most sensitive moves federal prosecutors can make as they pursue a criminal investigation. Mr. Rosenstein’s personal involvement in the decision signals that the evidence seen by law enforcement officials was significant enough to persuade the Justice Department’s second-in-command that such an aggressive move was necessary.

Mr. Trump’s advisers have spent the last 24 hours trying to convince the president not to make an impulsive decision that could put the president in more legal jeopardy and ignite a controversy that could consume his presidency, several people close to Mr. Trump said. The president began Tuesday morning with a pair of angry tweets, calling the raids “A TOTAL WITCH HUNT!” and venting that “attorney–client privilege is dead!”

5. who knows

what was done to this person as an infant/toddler, to stop his emotional growth then and there? i might pity him if he didn't insist on harming others as he careens through his miserable life. if he sought help and ever demonstrated an ounce of maturity. but no time for that, he's destroying the country.

8. Perhaps

the macho, competitive edgy streetwise sidewalks of Brooklyn that he or his father grew up in, or being told 'your name means trump, you put it all over everybody' and paddle him along

There are a few articles on family history for those willing to piece it together.

you are right though, events, personalities, emotions, patterns, mental adaptations echo across several generations. Family lore has endurance that few pay any attention to.

14. Despite

family ancestors from the 3 or 4 lower boroughs, my geography is fuzzy. Ethnic divides and attitude is all I recall from childhood. Sorry if I'm drawing invalid generalities, I should know better.

16. lol

there's Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Staten Island, and Bronx?

I remember Mark Russell, the political comedian and satirist, lampooning Texan Phil Gramm on his presidental candidacy. Gramm got to New York and asked "Where are the Bronx?"

So yes, I meant Staten Island, Queens, Brooklyn - on a map are the lower 3.

11. I hear you.

I'm certainly not advocating for corporal punishment for children - even Cheeto's favorite: spankings.

But given Rosenstein's first name, I couldn't resist.

4. i think if he's bounced out,

he won't go alone. that he did this reaffirms his fealty to the constitution and the rule of law, and says loud and clear to me that the justice department knows that trump is dirty as he can possibly be (probably worse than i've even imagined, and that is pretty bad).

we don't know that trump hasn't already privately demanded that he be fired and been refused. we really don't. there's a reason the justice train keeps plugging along, and it isn't because trump wants it that way.

17. He probably believed all the InfoWars and Fox News op eds how Obama ruled like a dictator

And thought that sounded good. And that no one could touch him in any kind of legal way because he would be in essence king of the land!
