Kroger stops selling magazines featuring assault rifles

Source: USA Today

Kroger said it will stop selling magazines that feature assault rifles as part of a tightening of its policies in the wake of the Parkland mass shooting and growing national anger over gun violence.

The Cincinnati-based supermarket retailer said the new policy is being phased in now across its national chain. Kroger didn't name specific titles, but periodicals that have featured assault weapons include: Guns & Ammo, Tactical Life and Recoil.

“We regularly review the company’s assortment of periodicals and make merchandising decisions based on customer preferences,” said Kroger spokeswoman Kristal Howard.

Kroger officials said the latest decision dovetails with the retailer's move a few weeks ago to raise the minimum age to buy guns from its Fred Meyer chain from 18 to 21.

Apparently Kroger hasn't said how it'll screen. That'd be a big can of worms, and my best guess is they'll pass on typical advertising and focus on magazine covers and content.

I stood in front of the magazine rack at my local Kroger and counted Gun magazines. I came up with 30+ different titles of magazines about guns. I purposely did not include Hunting titles such as Field and Stream. Although most hunting titles had articles about guns it was not the main focus of the title.

To compare I found 6 magazines that could be considered about science. Discover, Scientific American, National Geographic, Popular Science, Popular Mechanics, and Psychology Today.

I have done the same thing at my Barnes and Nobles magazine rack and found similar results. A few more Science type magazines but also more gun magazines.

with Fred Meyers recent announcement they will phase out ammo and firearms. I believe they are Kroger-owned but do not know if they will cut the magazines, as well.

This is really good news and takes some collective corporate balls. Hats off to Kroger, Dicks Sporting Goods, Fred Meyers, etc. With luck, the start of a trend.

I, for one, can't stand seeing gun porn in my face all the time whenever I am in a bookstore or Kroger.

I will make it a point to email corporate headquarters to thank them and tell them I will continue to shop in their store vs. the only other competitor in our area which is directly across the street from Kroger. Come to think of it, I will email corporate headquarters of their competitor and tell them what I'm doing.

I wonder if a Kroger exec thought up this brilliant move?

Just watch the NRA's Dana (I'm-really-a-witch) Loesch make hay here with claims of suppression of the 1st Amendment and freedom of speech .

I hadn't been in my local Fred Meyer for months because of the guns there. Said 'maybe now I will feel like shopping there again.' But I think I will stay away for as long as I can. It has been no hardship to leave Fred Meyer and go elsewhere. Hate Kroger for replacing all their brands with less quality goods.
