Clinton: I won places moving forward, Trump won places moving backward

Source: The HILL

.
Former secretary of state Hillary Clinton took broad swipes at Trump voters on Saturday, blaming poorer areas of the United States for her 2016 election defeat to President Trump.

At the India Today Conclave 2018 in Mumbai, Clinton told a crowd that the states she won represented a higher gross domestic product than the areas won by Trump.

"If you look at the map of the United States, there's all that red in the middle where Trump won," Clinton said. "I win the coast, I win, you know, Illinois and Minnesota, places like that."

"I won the places that represent two-thirds of America's gross domestic product," she continued. "So I won the places that are optimistic, diverse, dynamic, moving forward. And his whole campaign, 'Make America Great Again,' was looking backwards."

1. Great! But Hillary, we need you to speak up more!

She could devastate the Trump campaigns this Fall and really put the hurt on so many republiscum candidates. Please speak up much more between now and then.

2. Me thinks she is creeping back in, to do so.

Things will heat up, starting in July

And that's when she will pounce!

6. If this was the time, for sure she would.

Unfortunately, using her name is still like pouring gasoline on both the right and the hostile left. The smoldering frustration of a few here on DU is barely below the surface. They so deserve it, but she and we emphatically do not.

But the GOP will certainly be activating this smoldering nastiness nationally as the investigation progresses and 2018 draws nearer. Trump's constantly accusing Clinton of being the one colluding with Russia, and we need to be ready for that.

But it was a pleasure to see this post. If I had a wish right now, it might be to be sitting with Secretary Clinton and whomever, listening to them discuss Tillerson etcetera.

"Oh, just black, thanks."

13. She would be better speaking positively about the ways those states are moving forward and

how the country as a whole would benefiit from policies like those states have without referencing that they voted for her. She might be better speaking about domestic issues as she did here. On foreign policy, she could help by reminising about her time, how things worked and the relationships built. This would allow people to see her as the intelligent, committed person she is - speaking of much happier times - which might actually be more enjoyable for her. This IMPLICITLY criticizes Trump and the Republicans. Leave it to those listening to make the jump that things would have been better had she won.

Because she was the 2016 nominee in that very nasty campaign (because Trump was beyond nasty), it is easy for Republicans to spin any negative Trump comment (in fact even neutral comments) as just her being bitter. Her voice as a serious Democratic statesperson is too important to waste.

This is my opinion and obviously not what she has chose, but even in 2016, I thought it a mistake that the campaign made HER the lead attack dog against Trump. There were many other Democrats out defing the disaster Trump was. Hillary Clinton was always at her best seriously explaining policy and what it could do for people.

5. Oh, sorry, I forgot we're supposed to "reach out" to Shitstain's voters . . .

Maybe we could incorporate more tariffs, a big border wall and enhanced deportation into the Democratic Party platform!!

7. No, we are supposed to enact a Democratic agenda for America

To do so we need to control at least 51 seats in the Senate. Hard to do so with just the solidly blue places on the map electing our candidates. The truth is one thing. Self inflicted injuries is another. Comments that can predictably be considered as insulting to some people whose support you seek are not helpful if they do not serve some important counterbalancing purpose. Sometimes painful truths must be spoken at inopportune times. Other times some discretion is more in order, particularly if the lack of same endangers your ability to move forward on important issues important to people who you care about.

10. This country needs a reality injection . . . .

And it ain't coming from BAU politics, and it sure as shit isn't coming from Shitstain and his cult members.

The only problem with what Hillary said is that it's the simple truth. Oh, and by the way, she's not running for anything.

16. Right. This is just another way of calling people "deplorable"

It's not helpful to alienate groups of voters. (unless you're Trump)

9. Not a very good meme, Hillary! We need to get some of those places that are suffering on our side.

Democrats can help them better than Republicans can. People in fly-over places will read this as praising the elites and dissing ordinary working people. If she ran for president again this tone-deaf clip would be used for effective negative advertising.

P.S. I love Hillary. Please don't peg this as an anti-Clinton dig. it's just that if we want to win elections nation-wide, we have to avoid this type of characterization of red states, no matter how true it is.

15. What a nasty video title. Of course, that doesn't surprise me one bit.

The double standards and hypocrisy are to be expected.

I guess we can expect to see an avalanche of ridiculous attacks against Democrats in the coming months. Lots of folks save up their special brand of "criticisms" for crucial election seasons like the one coming up in November.

Some of the replies in this thread are the standard definition of "bitter".
